Second Half Run Pushes Wheaton Past Lasell in Field Hockey Action

Newton, Mass. (10/14/12) – The Lasell College women's field hockey team dropped a non-conference matchup with visiting Wheaton College, falling 6-3 on Sunday afternoon. The Lyons improve to 3-10 overall, while Lasell falls to 4-11 on the season.

Cristina Wilson (Wilmington, Mass.) tallied a goal and an assist for Lasell, who also got goals from Ashley Gleason (Suffield, Conn.) and Nikita Soares (Westport, Mass.). Cassie Aviles (Bellingham, Mass.) made three saves in the early going for Lasell, before giving way to Taylor Sheehan (Brewster, Mass.) who finished with four saves on the day.

Tracy McCann (Westerly, R.I.) scored a pair of goals for Wheaton, Gillian Mann (Burlington, Vt.) collected a goal and an assist, while Alex Smith (Suffield, Conn.), Olivia Edwards (So. Portland, Me.), and Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass.) each netted goals as well. Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass.) stopped five shots in the opening half for the Lyons, and Madison Wolters (Marston Hills, Mass.) relieved her, making four saves in the second half.

Alex Smith opened the scoring for Wheaton, finishing on a feed from Andrea Winn (Westwood, Mass.)  in the game's fifth minute, and Olivia Edwards made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal in the 13th minute. McCann scored her first goal of the game in the 23rd minute, courtesy of a Gillian Mann assist to put her side ahead 3-0 in the early going.

Ashley Gleason scored in the final minute of the first half, to cut the Lasell deficit to 3-1, and when Nikita Soares scored 2:17 into the second half, the hosts trimmed the Lyons lead to 3-2. Wheaton regained momentum scoring a pair of goals a minute apart when Mann and Rocha tallied in the 42nd and 43rd minutes of the match. McCann's second goal of the day in the 46th minute made it 6-2 in Wheaton's favor. Christina Wilson scored with 18 minutes to play to make it 6-3, but the Lasers were unable to convert on any of the chances down the stretch and dropped the 6-3 decision.

Wheaton will travel to M.I.T. for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference match-up against the Engineers on Tuesday October 16th. Lasell will be back in action on Saturday October 20th when they host Simmons College in a North Atlantic Conference tilt.
