Field Hockey Falls at Castleton

CASTLETON, Vt. - Senior Kealy Chipman (Bellows Falls, Vt.) had a career day in the Spartans 9-0 victory over the Lasell Lasers on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium. The forward had a hand in each of Castleton's first six goals, finishing the day with a career-high nine points on three goals and three assists.

The Spartans improve to 3-0 in conference action and 6-1 overall with the victory, their best seven-game start in program history. Castleton has now won 13 straight NAC regular season contests. Lasell drops to 4-6 overall with the loss and 1-5 in conference play.

Chipman gave the Spartans the lead just 48 seconds into the contest. The senior picked up the rebound off a Brynn Cayia (Berlin, Vt.) shot and buried into the back of the cage before Cassie Aviles (Bellingham, Mass.) could react.

Just over six minutes later Chipman helped push the lead to 2-0. On a 2-on-1, Chipman drew the goalie to her before slipping a pass to Blake Wardwell (Bridgewater, Vt.), who was all alone by the far post.

In the 11th minute, sophomore Kristy Pinkham (Brandon, Vt.) scored from right in front of the net off a pass from Chipman. Just 38 seconds later, Chipman scored her second goal of the game off a pass from Cayia for the 4-0 advantage.

Freshman Brandi Whittemore (Shoreham, Vt.) recorded her first career goal at the 16:51 mark, deflecting a Chipman dish past the legs of Aviles. Chipman earned her hat trick just over two minutes later following a penalty corner. Junior Rachel Preusser (Craryville, Vt.) sent the ball in from the near corner. Maria Stern (Springfield, Vt.) collected it at the top of the circle and took a dribble before passing to Chipman. She moved around a defender and ripped a shot into the back of the cage.

Junior Shawna Pinsonault (Brownsville, Vt.) concluded the first-half scoring with just 1:28 left in the period, shooting off a rebound right in front of the net.

In the second half, Preusser got in on the action. The ball ricocheted off the goalie¹s pads and she was in front to put home the shot for her ninth goal of the season.

Freshman Emily Hudson (Dillsburg, Pa.) concluded the scoring in the 63rd minute with her first varsity goal.

Sophomore Jessica Galatioto (Queensbury, N.Y.) was only forced to make one save in the first half to earn the win. Senior Corinne Healy (Jeffernson Township, N.J.) and freshman Heather Ploof (Salisbury, Vt.) split time in the final 35 minutes. Aviles took the loss, allowing the first six goals before being lifted for Taylor Sheehan (Brewster, Mass.).

Castleton returns to action on Oct. 2, when the team travels to face Middlebury at 6:30 p.m., while Lasell will visit Colby-Sawyer on October 3rd for another North Atlantic Conference match-up.
