Lasell Field Hockey Upended by WPI

Worcester, MA --- Lasell College was upended by WPI, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference field hockey contest which marked the season opener for the Lasers. WPI improves on the early season to a 2-0 mark, while Lasell's campaign begins at 0-1.

Lasell's senior goalkeeper Christine Thornton (Canton, MA) kept Lasell alive throughout the first half as she faced nine shots-on-goal in the frame, stopping each one of the Engineers attempts.  Thornton gave up just three goals all day, turning aside 15 total shots on the day.

The Laser defense was active in supporting Thornton in the back field as well. A defensive save by Emily Cooper (Riverhead, NY) midway through the second half improved the overall save tally for Lasell to 16.

The Engineers broke through the 0-0 deadlock two and a half minutes into the second half.  Celena Dopart (Washington, DC) came up with the go-ahead goal and Maggie Wigley (Bridgewater, MA) deposited the insurance goal six minutes later.

WPI's final score was produced in the 57th minute when senior Paige Hanson (East Hartford, CT) knocked home a pass from Danielle Antonellis (Duxbury, MA).

Liz Dufresne (Worcester, MA) collected the win in net for the hosts, turning away all four shots she faced to record her second career shutout.

WPI enjoyed a 30-4 bulge in shots while holding a 15-5 edge in penalty corners.  Katelyn Fabri (Fairfield, CT) provided an offensive spark for the Lasers, collecting a pair of shots, while Sam Smithers (Yarmouth, MA) and Taylor Hulitzky (Medway, MA) added attempt a piece.

Lasell ventures to Cambridge for their next contest to take on MIT at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6th.
