WPI Comes Out on Top in Season Opener

Worcester, Mass.- The Lasell College field hockey team opened up the 2009 season at Worcester Polytech Institute on Saturday, dropping their first game of the year 2-0.  Though the score did not reflect in the Lasers favor, Lasell saw some fine performances, particularly from sophomore goalkeeper Christine Thornton (Canton, Mass.).

The Engineers kept Thornton busy in net the whole 70 minute contest, outshooting the Lasers 25-6 in the entire game.  Nevertheless, Thornton and her teammates were able to keep the Engineers at bay for the entire first half.

Hannah Cebry (Burlington, Conn.) was able to attempt two shots for Lasell, and first year Holly Irvin (Derry, NH) challenged WPI's goalkeeper with another before the teams retreated into a scoreless intermission.

After the break, WPI's Paige Hanson (East Hartford, Conn.) and Maggie Wigley (Bridgewater, Mass.) each tallied goals to seal the non-conference victory for the Engineers.

Hanson's goal came just 45 seconds after the intermission, which proved to be the game-winner.  Wigley's extra point was scored with just over four minutes remaining in the contest.

Thornton finished the day with 12 total saves.  Cebry, Irvin, and Kasey Looney (Leicester, Mass.) all got off cracks at WPI's net in the second half, but were unable to connect.

The Lasers return to action on Tuesday, September 8th at 4:00 p.m. at M.I.T.
