Lasers Drop Tough Game to Wheaton

Newton, Mass.- It was a hard fought battle on a wet and chilly Grellier Field today as the Lasell College Lasers took on the Wheaton College Lyons in non-conference field hockey action.  With just over one minute elapsed into the second half, the visiting Lyons scored what proved to be the game-winning goal followed by a security goal in the final fifteen minutes.   Wheaton left triumphant at 4-2.

Two Lasers scored their first goals of the season during today's contest.  Natasha Wood (White River, VT) and Hannah Cebry (Burlington, Conn.) each dropped shots past Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, Mass.) in the Lyon's net, while Sara Jannuzzi (Glen, NH) and Tia Pratt (S. Paris, ME) tossed in a pair of helpers.

For Wheaton, Jessica Strock (Centerville, Mass.) tallied five points and Emily Asack (Stoughton, Mass.) recorded four more en route to the Lyons third win of the season.  Alex Block (Saratoga, CA) added one goal for two points.

It was Block's goal that first put the Lyons on the board.  Just before the 10 minute mark of the contest, Block made contact with a loose ball caught in a scramble in front of the Lasers net and shot it past Lasell's keeper Erin Norton (Yarmouth, ME).

Wood struck next, as Jannuzzi took off downfield dribbling from the center line and coaxing Bagley out of the net. Jannuzzi shot past Bagley, but it was Wood who knocked the ball into the baseboard of the goal to even the score, 1-1.

Seven minutes later, Strock picked up a pass from Asack to put Wheaton ahead, 2-1, before halftime.

The Strock-Asack duo struck again just 1:18 into the second period. Asack dished off to Strock who had a direct shot eight yards out.

The Lasers closed in on the Lyons when Cebry connected on a quick turn-and-shoot attack, at 40:11.  Pratt rushed all the way from midfield before finding Cebry in scoring position.

Asack was the final goal scorer of the day, as Block sent a penalty corner to Strock who made a move before finding Asack on the wing.  The shot bounced high into the Lasers net, finalizing the contest at 4-2.

Wheaton took 24 total shots in the match, while Lasell attempted only 9.  The Lyons also held the advantage on penalty corners, 10-1.

Norton finished the contest with 10 saves in net and was aided throughout the contest by some notable defense. Ainsley Wolfe (Derry, NH) played a remarkable game, squashing multiple offensive opportunities for the Lyons.  Tiffany Potter (Rochdale, Mass.) also had a noteworthy day in the backline, picking up a defensive save, along with winning in several one-on-one situations.

Lasell's next contest will be at Plymouth State University on Wednesday, September 16th at 4:00 p.m.
