BSB: Lasers Split Doubleheader with Washington College

Port St. Lucie, FL – The Lasell University Baseball team split the second doubleheader of their spring break trip on Sunday, defeating Washington College in game one 13-6 and dropping game two, 4-2. The split moves Lasell to 4-3 on the season.

Game One:

The Lasers jumped out to an early lead in game one when Tim Callahan singled in two runs in the top of the second. Washington College fired back in the bottom half with an RBI single of their own off the bat of Elias Philiposi.

Pierce Clare got the start at first base for the Lasers and had himself a day going three for five. He would extend Lasell's lead in the fifth, blasting a double over the right fielder's head to score Scott Lyon and Brad Edwards.

The sixth inning would be when the floodgates opened for the Lasers, Edwards would bring in runs of his own when he reached on a fielder's choice that scored two more runs, giving Lasell a 6-2 lead. Junior Connor Freitas then singled to score Callahan and an error on the following at bat would allow Lyon to score again making it 8-2. Four consecutive singles from Matt Williams, Bryan Baumann, Callahan, and Edwards would extend the Laser lead to 13-2 entering the final inning.

Washington College attempted to make a comeback, scoring four runs on just two hits in the bottom of the seventh, but Senior Tim Coakley was able to shut the door forcing the last two hitters to strike out and ground out to secure the Laser win.

Jeremy Blackwood got the start for the Lasers, and he threw a gem. Blackwood earned the win and tossed six innings allowing seven hits, two runs (one earned), while walking just one and striking out three.

Clare led the offense with two singles and a double, driving in two runs. Callahan also had three hits and drove in four runs. Edwards, Freitas and Williams had two hits each, while Edwards drove in two runs and Freitas and Williams drove in one a piece.

Game Two:

Game two was less of an offensive battle as both sides pitching held strong throughout. Graduate student Zachary Simone was on the bump for the Lasers in game two and was dealing early on, tossing six innings, allowing just three hits and one run.

The Lasers got on the board first with a sacrifice fly from junior Chris Bulk that scored Lyon in the second inning. Bulk would extend the lead for the Lasers blasting a solo home run over the left field wall in the fifth inning.

Washington College got on the board in the top of the sixth after a run was walked in, but the Lasers still led 2-1. After stranding runners on second and third in the bottom half of the sixth the Lasers looked to close it out in the seventh but, Washington College loaded the bases with a double, single and walk. All three of those runners would score from a double off the bat of Ty Everitt to give the Geese a 4-2 lead.

The Lasers failed to scrape any runs across in the bottom half and dropped game two, 4-2.

Ethan Bernardo earned the loss, giving up three hits and three runs in his lone inning.

Offensively, Bulk supplied the offense for the Lasers finishing one for two and driving in the only two Laser runs. Callahan also had another three-hit game, smoking a double and two singles. Lyon added two singles as well and Ross Audet, CJ Mills and jared Whitby all added a single each.
