Lynn, M.A. – The Lasers baseball team swept a doubleheader against Fisher College on Monday 6-1, and 8-7 at Fraser Field. The Lasers start the season 2-0 while Fisher drops to 2-10 on the year.

Game One

The Lasers started off loading the bases in the first inning but couldn't get any runs across until the third when senior Bryan Baumann blasted a two-run shot to give Lasell an early 2-0 lead. Later on in the fifth, junior Connor Freitas punched a single up the middle to score junior Tim Callahan and put the Lasers up 3-0.

Junior Matt Fletcher was on the bump for the Lasers season opener and threw a gem, earning the win and going five strong innings, allowing just two hits while striking out five. After Fletcher's departure, Fisher was able to push a run across on an RBI single to pull within two, 3-1.

Lasell opened the floodgates in the eighth plating two more runs on a double to left center from senior Ross Audet and tacked on their final run in the ninth on a Brad Edwards RBI single capping off the 6-1 win.

The Lasers offense was active all day collecting 13 hits in game one and was led by Freitas and Edwards who collected three hits and an RBI apiece. Baumann and Audet each had two hits and two RBIs as well to help the cause.

Adam Marsh collected the four inning save, allowing four hits, and one run while walking just one and striking out three.

Game Two

Game two was more of the same for the Laser offense as they collected nine hits and scored 8 runs. Two of those runs came across in the third inning, Callahan roped a single to right field that was misplayed by the right fielder and allowed Baumann to score. A batter later Callahan would score on a wild pitch giving the Lasers a 2-0 lead. However, Fisher came back and put up a six spot in the bottom half of the inning. After an RBI double from Jatnier Torres got them started, back-to-back RBI singles from Gabriel River and Brendan Trohon would lead to a three-run home run off the bat of Emmanuel Rosado and the Lasers trailed 6-2.

Lasell would begin to chip away after Junior Chris Bulk hit a sacrifice fly to score graduate student Scott Lyon and an RBI double from Callahan to keep the Lasers within striking distance. Callahan would drive in another run later in the sixth on a sacrifice fly for his second RBI of the day.

The Lasers would take the lead the next inning when junior Jared Whitby sent a single by the shortstop, scoring Lyon. The very next batter Baumann and fellow senior Dave Egan executed a safety squeeze to perfection, giving the Lasers a 7-6 lead.

In the bottom half of the eighth Fisher plated the tying run after a controversial double down the right field line was ruled fair, the runner was then bunted over to third and scored on an RBI single knotting it up at seven a piece entering the ninth.

In the ninth inning Baumann came up big yet again scoring Bulk on a sacrifice fly and giving the Lasers an 8-7 victory.

The offense stayed hot in game two as Baumann led the way going 3-for-4 and driving in two runs. Callahan added two hits and two RBIs as well and Lyon also helped with two hits and scored two runs.

The pitching staff put in a collective effort in game two with big performances from senior Darek Lallo who threw 2.1 innings allowing only 2 hits while getting two big punch outs to end his innings. Juniors Pierce Clare and Brendan Zaleski each threw scoreless innings and fellow junior Owen Caldwell got the win after striking out two in his lone inning. Graduate student Ethan Bernardo collected the save striking out one and slamming the door in the ninth.
