BSB: Fletcher Sets Two School Records in Complete Game; Lasers Sweep Raiders

Watertown, MA  - The Lasell Lasers continued their strong start to conference play with a doubleheader sweep of the Rivier Raiders on Saturday, winning both games by a final score of 3-1. The Lasers are now 13-8 on the season and 7-1 in GNAC play, while the Raiders are now 5-16 and 2-4.

Game One

The Lasers opened the scoring, going up 1-0 in the first on a Matthew Bischof ground out. They doubled their lead in the fourth on another ground out, this time by Owen Caldwell. The Lasers went up 3-0 in the fifth when Bryan Baumann was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Raiders got one run back in the sixth on a ground out, but were unable to get anything else, as the Lasers took home the 3-1 win.

The Lasers won, despite having just four hits, one each from CJ Mills, Connor Freitas, Matthew Bischof, and Owen Caldwell. Adam Marsh moved to 5-1 on the season, going six innings on the mound, while allowing just three hits and one earned run. He struck out nine while walking just one. He was relieved by Ethan Bernardo, who went one inning, striking out two to pick up the save.

Game Two

Similar to game one, The Lasers slowly built up a lead one run at a time. They opened the scoring in this game on a Matthew Bischof sacrifice fly in the third. They then added runs in the sixth and eighth innings on a pair of Jared Whitby RBI singles to go up 3-0. The Raiders got one unearned run in the ninth after an error and a pair of hits, but it was not enough, as the Lasers won again by a final score of 3-1.

The Lasers have relied on their hitting all season, but for the second straight game of the day, it was the pitching that dominated. Ace pitcher Matthew Fletcher went the distance, going all nine innings, while allowing just six hits and a lone unearned run. He struck out a new school record 15 strikeouts, breaking the record of 14 that he set earlier in the season. The 15 strikeouts also put him at 56 for the season, breaking the school record for strikeouts in a season of 49, previously held by Dan Petr in 2019. He walked just one while picking up his fourth win of the season.

At the plate, the Lasers collected eight hits, with two from Tim Callahan, Jared Whitby, and Christopher Bulk each.

Up next - The Lasers will next play on Wednesday, April 12th when they host Framingham State at 8pm at Brandeis.
