Baseball: Strong game one pitching leads Lasell to conference split with Anna Maria

Marlborough, Mass. – The Lasell University Lasers baseball team split their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader against the Anna Maria College Amcats, 3-1 and 5-0, Saturday afternoon.

Lasell jumped out to an early lead as freshman Devon Lapierre (Dover, N.H.) walked with the bases loaded to bring home sophomore Ross Audet (Swansea, Mass.) and take a 1-0 lead after the first inning.

The Lasers quickly made it a two-run lead as sophomore Bryan Baumann (Deerfield, Mass.) drove a double to left field in the second inning to bring home freshman Pierce Clare (Middletown, Mass.).

Graduate student Jason Shell (Sandwich, Mass.) got the Amcats on the board in the fifth inning with an RBI double to left center field that brought home junior Elijah Spataj (Cheshire, Conn.).

Freshman Tyler DiNezza (Cranston, R.I.) gave the Lasers an insurance run as he came home to score on an error by Anna Maria.

Freshman Matthew Fletcher (Wethersfield, Conn.) shut the game down in the seventh inning to earn the save and seal the 3-1 win for Lasell in game one.

Freshman Nick Choate (Grafton, Mass.) was solid on the mound for Anna Maria throwing five and two thirds' innings only allowing two hits and one earned run while striking out nine. Graduate Student Jack Marzec was also solid in relief striking out three over an inning and a third while giving up no hits. Spataj went two for two at the plate for the Amcats and Shell drove in the only run for Anna Maria.

Sophomore Darek Lallo (Warwick, R.I.) got the win on the mound for Lasell going five innings giving up six hits and one earned run while striking out two. Baumann drove in a run with an RBI and Mills drove in a run also for Lasell.

Game 2: Lasell 0 Anna Maria 5

The Amcats struck first in game two in the first inning as junior Hunter Dunithan (Reno, Nevada) hit a sacrifice fly to score Shell and take an early lead.

Anna Maria got on the board again in the third inning as freshman Jeremy Rosenberg (Boynton Beach, Fla.) singled through the right side to bring home Shell and make it a 2-0 lead. Spataj made it a four-run lead for the Amcats as he doubled home Dunithan and Rosenberg.

Junior James Powers (Folsom, Calif.) added one more in the fifth inning as he came home to score on a wild pitch and sophomore Anthony Pingeton (Charlton, Mass.) closed the game out on the mound to take a 5-0 win for Anna Maria.

Pingeton got the start and win on the mound going the distance only allowing four hits and striking out nine. Spataj drove in two runs on two hits and Shell went three for four at the plate with two runs scored. Rosenburg also collected two hits and drove in a run and Dunithan drove in a run for Anna Maria.

Sophomore Tim Coakley (Acton, Mass.) was solid in a relief appearance for the Lasers throwing three innings only giving up one unearned run on two hits and striking out two.

The Lasers will be back in action on Sunday, April 24, when they play another GNAC doubleheader against Norwich University. First pitch at Stein Diamond is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
