Baseball: Lasell sweeps Elms, breaks school run record in the process to stay undefeated in the GNAC

Waltham, Mass. –  The Lasell University Lasers baseball team broke the single game record for runs in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) sweep of Elms College, 11-3 and 18-5, Tuesday night at Stein Diamond.

Game 1 Lasell 11 Elms 3

Lasell struck first in game one as freshman Vaun Larisa (Lincoln, R.I.) grounded to third with the bases loaded and beat the throw out for an RBI in the first inning.

Lasers scored again in the second inning as freshman Pierce Clare (Middletown, R.I.) came across on a wild pitch. Senior Matthew Bischof (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) drove home two with a double giving the Lasers a 4-0 lead after two.

Lasell kept scoring in the third as freshman Jordan Martinez (Naples, Fla.) doubled over the left fielder's head to bring home Clare.

The fourth inning saw Lasell open the game up starting with a double from freshman Tyler DiNezza (Cranston, R.I.)  to bring home Bischof. Sophomore Bryan Baumann (Deerfield, Mass.) followed up the DiNezza RBI double with one of his own driving in DiNezza. Freshman Griffin Ferreira (Westport, Mass.) singled to left center to bring Baumann home and open an 8-0 lead after four innings of play.

Elms fought back in the sixth inning, getting their first on a single by freshman Alex DelCampo (Groton, Conn.) that brought home sophomore Seamus Higgins (Rutland, Mass). The Blazers added a second on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Justin Miller (Prospect, Conn.). Sophomore Cole Blades (Lowell, Mass.) cut the Lasell lead to five on a ground out.

Baumann drove in another run in the bottom half of the inning as he singled to center to bring home Bischof. With the bases load with Martinez drew a walk to drive in another. Baumann came across to score after a throw by the catcher hit the Lasell runner on first, as the Lasers got the three runs back to take game one 11-3.

Higgins led the Blazers with two hits and DelCampo and freshman George Chaya (Methuen, Mass) each had one hit apiece. DelCampo, Miller, and Blades all drove in a run for Elms.

Sophomore Darek Lallo (Warwick, R.I.) went the distance allowing four hits and allowing one earned run while striking out five to grab the win. Bischof led the Lasers with three hits, two RBIs and came across to score twice. Baumann had a trifecta of two's as he scored two runs, had two hits, and brought in two runs. Martinez also had two hits and drove in two for Lasell. Ferreira, DiNezza and Larisa all brought home a run in the win.

Game 2 Lasell 18 Elms 5

The Lasers bats came alive to start the second game as the put up 11 runs in the first frame of the game. Starting off with an RBI double by Bischof quickly followed up by a double by Larisa. Baumann helped add to the Lasers inning as he singled home two. Ferreira brought home another as he beat out a double play ball to bring home DiNezza. With his second time up to the plate in the inning sophomore CJ Mills (Waltham, Mass.) singled to center to drive home a run. The next batter was sophomore Ross Audet (Swansea, Mass.) took a strike and then unloaded the bases with a grand slam to left field. The next pitch Bischof made it back-to-back homeruns as he blasted it over the right field fence to cap the scoring for the Lasers.

The Lasers tacked on more runs in the third inning, getting a two RBI single with the bases loaded from Larisa bringing home Mills and Audet. Still with the bases loaded Ferreira walked to bring in another and the Lasers scored the final run as Larisa came home to score on a wild pitch to take a 15-0 lead.

The Blazers answered back in the fourth as Tyler Galenski (Wilbraham, Mass.) sent one over the left field fence for a home run.

The Blazers added more runs in the fifth, getting their first run on a fielder's choice off the bat of DelCampos scoring senior Josh Nohilly (Bristol, Conn.) and a second run on a fielder's choice off the bat of freshman Trevor Nohilly (Bristol, Conn.)

Lasell responded in the bottom half of the inning scoring two runs on a double by junior Spencer Murphy (Barrington, N.H.). Martinez drove in another on a single to center field and the Lasers scored the team record run on an error by the Blazers.

Elms was not finished putting runs on the board as J. Nohilly singled to right center to bring home freshman Spencer Azzara (Clastonbury, Conn.). Sophomore Xander Karadimas (Granby, Conn.) came across to score the Blazers final run on a wild pitch. The strong first inning for the Lasers propelled them to victory as they beat the Blazers 18-5.

Freshman CJ Kuentzel (Albany, N.Y.) was strong in relief throwing an inning and two thirds while striking out four without giving up a hit. Junior Dominick Whalen was also strong in relief throwing one inning and striking out two without a hit. Galenski led the way for Elms with two hits, including a homerun and one RBI. J. Nohilly, T. Nohilly, and DelCampo all drove in a run for the Blazers.

Graduate student Chris O'Connor (Duxbury, Mass.) got the start and win for the Lasers throwing four innings while allowing three hits, giving up three runs and striking out five. Graduate student Jack Snyder (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and junior Joey Rego (East Providence, R.I.) both threw perfect innings while Rego struck out one. Audet led the charge with the bats as he led the Lasers with three hits and four RBIs while scoring three runs. Bischof knocked in two runs while scoring three times and collecting two hits. Larisa also collected two hits, along with scoring twice and driving in three. Baumann went two for three at the plate with two RBIs and Mills had two hits with one RBI and scored three runs. Ferreira scored twice and knocked in a pair of runs. Martinez collected one hit and knocked in a run as well. Off the bench Murphy delieved a two RBI performance while scoring a run and having one hit. Sophomore Camdyn Ames (Valatie, N.Y.) scored a run and had a hit off the bench for the Lasers.

The Lasers will be back in action on Saturday, April 2, when they travel to Colby-Sawyer College for a GNAC matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
