Baseball: Lasers drop a pair to Wisconsin-Stout

Fort Myers, Fla. – The Lasell University baseball team fell in both games they played against the University of Wisconsin at Stout Blue Devils, 11-0 and 13-6, Thursday morning.

Game 1 – UW Stout 12 Lasell 6

The Blue Devil struck first in the top of the third inning as junior Levi Wilson (Minneapolis, Minn.) drove home a run on a single. The next batter up was junior Jacoby Endreas (Sheboygan, Wis.) who doubled home Wilson. Junior Jack Schirpke (Bloomington, Ill.) made it two doubles in a row for the Blue Devils which brought home Endreas to give Wisconsin Stout a three-run lead.

Lasell answered back in the bottom half of the third scoring their first run on a single by sophomore CJ Mills. Freshman Jordan Martinez scored the Lasers final run of the third as when he came across to score on single by fellow classmate Tyler DiNezza.

The Blue Devils brought two more across in the top of the fourth. Sophomore Colin Hageman (Janesville, Wis.) brought home the first run when he hit an RBI double and later scored the other run Blue Devil run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by senior Joel Thimsen (Minnetonka, Minn.).

The Blue Devils struck quickly again in the sixth inning, scoring both of their runs in just their first two at bats. Hageman started the inning off with a triple and was quickly brought home by the next batter, senior Charlie Szykowny (Palos Heights, Ill.) who hit a home run to bring Hageman home and give the Blue Devils a five-run lead.

Wisconsin Stout opened the game up in the final frame getting their first run on a Lasell error. Szyknowny added a second when he singled home a run. Thimsen followed up in the next at bat singling home another run. Sophomore Drew Ries (Beloit, Wis.) drove home the fourth run of the inning with a single and Endreas brought home the final run with a single of his own.

The Lasers battled back in with their last at bats, getting their first run after freshman Pierce Clare was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Still with the bases loaded sophomore Matthew Paharik hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home a second run. Freshman Devon Lapierre singled home another run as the Lasers scored three in the final frame, but it was not enough as the Blue Devils took game one 12-6.

Junior Ethan Kjellberg (Elk Mound, Wis.) got the start and win for the Blue Devils throwing four innings while giving up two runs. Szykowny had three hits in four at bats and brought home three. He was not alone with three hits as Endreas and Hageman both had three hits with Endreas bringing home two and Hageman bringing home one. Thimsen had two hits and two RBIs and Schirpke brought home two as well.

Freshman Alex Noel made his first career start on the mound going four innings and striking out two. Lapierre and Martinez led the Lasers with two hits each with Lapierre driving in two and Martinez scoring twice. Mills, DiNezza, Paharik and Clare all drove in runs for the Lasers as well.

Game 2 – UW Stout 11 Lasell 0

The first scoring of the game came in the second inning when Schirpke came across to score on an error by the catcher. Later in the inning the Blue Devils loaded the bases before Szykowny unloaded them with a grand slam.

After scoring a run the previous inning Schirpke brought one home on a single and then scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by junior Reese Vold (Black River Falls, Wis.) to give the Blue Devils a seven-run cushion.

The Blue Devils struck again in the fourth as Thimsen double home Szykowny.

Two sacrifice flies to right field gave the Blue Devils their runs in the fifth inning, coming off the bats of Wilson and sophomore Ryan Herbst (Janesville, Wis.).

Wisconsin Stout scored their final run on a fielder's choice that allowed Hageman to score.

Senior Cooper Beving (Norwalk, Iowa) got the start and win for the Blue Devils, only allowing one hit over four innings of work. Schirpke went four for four on the day with an RBI. Szykowny brought home four and added two hits.

Freshman Owen Caldwell threw two innings in relief for Lasell allowing one run on two hits while striking out one. Sophomore Bryan Baumann recorded the only hit of the game for the Lasers.  

The Lasers will be back in action on Saturday, March 19, when they play their final games of the spring break Florida trip against Skidmore College. The first game of the double header is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. and the second is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
