Baseball Ends Historic Tournament Run on 2-0 Shutout by Monks

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (5/7/16) The Lasell College baseball team fell to the Monks of Saint Joseph's College (Maine) 2-0, in Saturday's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Baseball Tournament elimination game at the Scotts Miracle Gro Athletic Complex.

The Lasers close out the 2016 season at 21-17 as the first Lasell team to play four rounds of the GNAC Postseason Tournament.

Monks' sophomore pitcher Travis Godbout (Portland, Maine) kept St. Joseph's College alive for the conference tournament with a full-game shutout, allowing just three hits from the Lasers. Corey McNamara (West Newbury, Mass.) pitched the eighth and ninth innings to get his seventh save of the year.

Senior Tyler Flaherty (Portland, Maine) and juniors Hector Coscione (Newton, Mass.) and Dom Mascolo (Waterbury, Mass.) accounted for the Lasell hitting, while senior Wes Hurty (Windsor, Conn.) and junior Matt Haskell (Wallingford, Conn.) also reached first base for the Lasers.

The Monks strung together eight hits on the day, highlighted by the game-winning RBI's from Nic Lops (South Portland, Maine) and Jameson Collins (Sandown, N.H.).

With two outs in the seventh, Monks' freshman Joey Murphy (Derry, N.H.) picked up a walk then moved to second on a single by Taylor Reuillard (Biddeford, Maine). Lops and Collins then hit back-to-back singles to score Murphy and Reuillard for the only scoring offense the tournament game saw.

Lasell had a strong pitching performance from senior starter Jake Malone (Harwich, Mass.) as he worked six scoreless innings and only surrendered five hits with three strikeouts and five walks. Reliever Casey Johnson (Windsor, Con.) took the loss in two innings of work.

The Monks will head to the GNAC Championship on Sunday against Suffolk with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m.
