STANDISH, Maine (4/26/14) – The Lasell College baseball team dropped a 7-5 result to Johnson and Wales in 10 innings in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday morning at Saint Joseph's College of Maine. Lasell slipped to 18-12 with the loss and will wait to see if they receive a bid to the Eastern College Athletic Conference New England tournament while Johnson and Wales improved to 29-13 with the victory.
Chris Pittman (Brockton, Mass.) doubled and singled twice for Lasell, scoring a run and driving in one as well. Wes Hurty Windsor, Conn.) singled twice and scored a run for the Lasers, while Bobby Ellard (Medfield, Mass.) singled, scored a run and drove in two for Lasell. Greg Sherman (Marshfield, Mass.) started on the mound for Lasell, throwing five innings and allowing four runs, two earned while scattering nine hits and striking out two. Ryan Bowen (Hudson, Mass.) took the loss, pitching five innings of relief and allowing four hits and three runs, one earned with striking out three.
Lasell opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Bobby Ellard walked, coming in to score on a double to right centerfield by Matt Sammarco (New Canaan, Conn.) to give Lasell a 1-0 lead. Johnson and Wales answered with three runs in the top of the third inning as Alex Pezzuto plated a run with a double to left center then came in to score on a single by Korey Ferull to make it 2-1. JWU added one more to make it 3-1 when Jake Dickers doubled in Tyler Pacheco with two outs.
Ellard knocked in two in the bottom of the third inning with a single to right centerfield that scored Pittman and Hector Coscione (Newton, Mass.), tying the score at 3-3. Johnson and Wales responded with a run in the top of the fourth on a single by Lou Umberto to go back on top 4-3.
Lasell went back in front in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring a run on a double by Pittman and another when Wes Hurty came in on a sacrifice bunt to take a 5-4 lead. Johnson and Wales tied the game in the top of the eighth inning when Carlos Sanab scored on a double steal with two outs to make it a 5-5 contest. The Lasers threatened in the bottom of the ninth inning, using a pair of walks and a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third with two outs but were unable to push a run across the plate.
Johnson and Wales scored two in the top of the tenth inning to go in front 7-5 and held off Lasell who again put runners on second and third with two outs before JWU escaped the jam to advance in tournament play.
