JWU Knocks Off Lasell in GNAC Baseball Playoff Action

Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University baseball team posted a 6-3 victory against Lasell in the Final Four of the 2013 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship at the Wildcat Athletic Complex on Thursday evening.

Billy Uberti (Newton, Mass.) singles twice and scored a pair of runs and Bobby Stachura (Middletown, Conn.) singled twice to pace the Lasell attack. Kevin Post took the loss for Lasell, tossing five and two third innings while allowing four runs, three earnd on five hits while fanning four. 

Freshman Jake Marchesseault (Wyoming, R.I.) picked up his fifth win if the season with four and two thirds innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits.  Ferullo went 2-for-3 with three runs in the win while junior Jake Dickerson (Garnet Valley, Pa.) recorded a pair of hits in the victory for the Wildcats.

Lasell got on the board first when freshman Wes Hurty (Windsor, Conn.) doubled and came around to score on a JWU miscue to take the 1-0 lead in the top of the second.  JWU knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third after sophomore Kory Ferullo (Rochester, N.H.) drew a two-out walk and scored on an RBI double by senior Zack Boyes (West Warwick, R.I.).

The visiting Lasers regained the lead in the top of the fifth when junior Billy Uberti (Newton, Mass.) singled and scored on a failed pickoff attempt two batters later for the 2-1 advantage.  The Wildcats responded in the bottom of the frame and took their first lead of the game on a two-run single to right center by junior Alex Pezzuto (Hastings, N.Y.) for the 3-2 lead. 

JWU tacked onto their lead in the bottom of the sixth and went ahead 4-2 on an RBI single to right by senior Tyler Newell (Westerly, R.I.).  In the top of the seventh, Lasell chipped away at the lead with an RBI single to right by junior Bobby Ellard (Medfield, Mass.) to make the score 4-3.  The Wildcats extended the lead to 5-3 on an RBI single to right by junior Jack Hocking (Hanover, Mass.)  JWU capped off the scoring in the bottom of the eight as sophomore Rob Bocchetti (East Meadow, N.Y.) led off with a double and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by senior James Reyes (Santo Domingo, D.R.) to propel the Wildcats to the 6-3 victory.

With the victory Johnson & Wales improves to 27-12 while Lasell falls to 13-22.  Both teams will return to action on Saturday, April 27th when they head to Nashua, N.H. for the remainder of the GNAC Championship.  Lasell will take on Suffolk at 12:00 p.m. while JWU will face off against St. Joseph's of Maine at 3:00 p.m.
