Lasell Women’s Volleyball drops matches to undefeated teams

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Lasell College women's volleyball team was matched up against a pair of undefeated teams Saturday afternoon at the MIT Invitational at the Rockwell Cage, and the Lasers were defeated by three sets by both #17-ranked MIT and regional power Springfield College.

Lasell dropped the first match to MIT by scores of 25-12, 25-20 and 25-11, and then went down to defeat to Springfield, 25-21, 25-15 and 25-19. MIT, which also defeated Endicott Saturday, is now 8-0 this season, while Springfield, also a winner over Endicott, improves to 7-0. Lasell remains winless on the season at 0-8.

Senior Olivia Addington (Orange, Calif.) and junior Kelly Cappitella (East Haddam, Conn.) had six kills apiece in the MIT match. Addington added a team-best eight digs and Cappitella had a team-high .333 attack percentage (6-2-12). Freshmen Corina Lombardi (York, Maine) and Meghan Roberts (Newington, Conn.) added four kills apiece for the Lasers, and classmate Jess Langan (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) finished with 17 assists.

Lasell had its best chance at winning a set in the second, jumping out to a 6-1 advantage and holding an 11-10 lead nearing the midway point. The Lasers were within two points at 20-18 before MIT pulled out the 25-20 victory. The hosts rattled off the first 10 points of the third set before going on to close out the match.

Addington posted her third double-double of the season against Springfield with a team-high 11 kills and 10 digs and a .321 attack percentage (11-2-28). Freshman Kiana Perez (Juncos, Puerto Rico) smashed nine kills and added 10 digs to finish one kill shy of a double-double. Sophomore Allie Jo Amos (Prescott, Ariz.) paced the team with 16 digs, and Langan recorded 19 assists.

Lasell gave the Pride a tough challenge in the first set, trailing just 23-21 before Springfield pulled out the set. The Pride ran off to an early 10-point lead en route to a win in the second set. The teams were tied at 12-12 and 16-16 in the final set before Springfield pulled away late to secure the victory.

 Lasell returns home for its home opener on Tuesday as the Lasers host Wentworth at 7:00 p.m. at the Athletic Center.
