Women's Volleyball Splits with Mitchell and Saint Joseph's Maine

NEWTON, Mass. (9/23/17) – The Lasell women's volleyball team went 1-1 in a Saturday afternoon tri-match with Mitchell College and Saint Joseph's College of Maine inside the Lasell Athletic Center.

In the middle match, Saint Joseph's downed Mitchell in straight sets, and improve to 7-7 overall, while the Lasers jump to 4-10. Mitchell drops to 0-9 with the pair of losses.

GAME ONE: Lasell vs. Saint Joseph's

The Lasers came back to take the second set against the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe, but the Monks hit .239 and .286 in the final frames to take the win, 3-1.

Olivia Addington (Orange, Calif.) again led the Lasers in the kills category with 18 overall, contributing 20 points with a service ace and two block assists. Mickayla Shelburn (Waterford, Conn.) was next in line nine kills, and a service ace, while Meredith Eagan (North Andover, Mass.) added 11 points off nine kills and two aces.

Kelsey Bickford (Somersworth, N.H.) was the lone Monk to see double digit kills, as the sophomore swung into 11 overall. Jordynne Copp (Cumberland, Maine) hit a team-best .368 with eight kills on 19 attempts, adding 10.5 points in the effort Jennelle Thompson led all players with 20 digs in the match.

GAME TWO: Saint Joseph's vs. Mitchell

In match two, the Monks needed just three sets to down the Mariners by set scores of 25-14, 25-10, and 25-19. The Monks hit over .200 in the two of three matches, as Copp and Erin Olson (Stoughton, Mass.) each swung into a team-best eight kills in the win. Jennelle Thompson (Farmington, N.H.) continued to lead the Monks' defense, hitting the floor for 11 digs total.

Nikki Gerald (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) led the Mariners with four kills, while Marissa Sweeney (Hudson, N.H.) and Ariana Carter (Central Falls, R.I.) registered three apiece.

GAME THREE: Lasell vs. Mitchell

Lasell swept the Mariners in the final match of the afternoon by scores of 25-21, 25-20, and 25-13. Addington swung into a team-best 12 kills and a tremendous four service aces for 16 points to double-up on her teammates. Eagan followed with eight points on seven kills and an ace, while Michele Canestro (Castleton, N.Y.) registered six kills.

The Lasers received a strong team defensive effort, as Caitlyn Garcia (Moreno Valley, Calif.) led the front with 13 digs. Canestro was a close second with five, while setter Taylor Tiezzi (Meriden, Conn.) dished out 22 assists.

Sweeney led the Mariners with three kills, two aces, and a block solo for 6.5 points. Courtney Cappabianca (Torrington, Conn.) hit the floor for 12 digs in a strong defensive effort, while Lauren Tompkins (Prospect, Conn.) had seven assists.

The Lasers are back in action on Monday when they travel to Framingham State for a 6:00 p.m. non-conference match. Saint Joseph's also returns to the court on Monday for a road game at Lesley at 8:00 p.m., while Mitchell travels to Trinity on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
