WPI Takes Women's Volleyball in Three in Last Non-Conference Tilt

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Lasell women's volleyball team dropped its final non-conference affair to WPI on Thursday night in Harrington Auditorium.

WPI senior Maddy Werth (Bedford, MA) hit .444 and delivered 14 kills, while not committing an error in the final two sets, to help lead host WPI to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-14).

Sophomore Olivia Addington (Orange, Calif.) and junior Taylor Tiezzi (Meriden, Conn.) each logged six kills for the guests. Tiezzi also accounted for both of the Lasers aces and 19 of the 20 helpers. Junior Caitlyn Garcia (Moreno Valley, Calif.) registered seven digs as Addington, Tiezzi and classmate Lauren Piper (Scarborough, Maine) all came up with five.

Werth (six digs) along with Brianna Parent (Epping, NH), Cassandra Tomerlin (La Quinta, CA), Caroline Meyer (Easton, MA), Shay Feeley (Franklin, MA), Samantha Bircsak (Acton, MA), and Sarah Lee (Seoul, South Korea) were recognized in a pre-match ceremony for their contributions to WPI volleyball program.

Sophomore Casey Hunt (Granby, CT) was next in line with eight swipes and seven digs. Feeley totaled 19 assists as Meyer (five digs) doled out eight and sophomore Azita Bakhtyari (Andover, MA) pitched in with seven in the first set. Tomerlin recorded a match-best 13 digs and four service aces.

The first set featured six ties before the Crimson and Gray secured eight of the next 10 points to force a timeout at 17-11. The middle frame was much more competitive with each side enjoying no more than a three point cushion until an ace by Tomerlin capped off a five-point run to make it 24-20 Engineers. WPI claimed the 4-0 advantage and went ahead by as much as 10 (20-10) in the third en route to the straight-set triumph.

Both teams close out the regular season Saturday. The Lasers (11-17) trek to Albertus Magnus (3pm) for a GNAC tri-match that also includes Johnson & Wales (1pm). The Engineers (21-8) head to Mount Holyoke Saturday for a 1pm NEWMAC contest.
