Women's Volleyball Rallies to Take Down Worcester State 3-2

NEWTON, Mass. (10/6/15) – The Lasell College women's volleyball team took home a five-set victory, 3-2, against the Lancers of Worcester State University on Tuesday evening in the Athletic Center .The win boosts the Lasers to 6-15 overall, while the Lancers fall to 5-10 this season.

Senior Sharisse Scott-Rawlins (Brockton, Mass.) paced the Lasers' offensive with 11 kills and five digs, while senior Heather Longley (North Granby, Mass.) contributed with eight kills and two digs. Sophomore libero Caitlyn Garcia (Moreno Valley, Calif.) backed up the Lasers with 24 digs, as senior Taylor Hansen (Gorham, Maine) followed with 16 digs.

Lancers senior Jennifer Cabral (Swansea, Mass.) recorded her third consecutive double-double with 11 kills and 19 digs, while sophomore Alysia Pearce (Pepperell, Mass.) and freshman Emily Carens (Northboro, Mass.) split 10 kills apiece.

Down by a match score of 2-1, the Lasers switched gears in set four to take down Lancers 25-17. Garcia served into an ace in the opening plays to double up on the visitors, 8-4, where the Lasers took the game for their own. With Garcia on the serve, the Lasers rallied for seven straight points to force a Worcester State timeout. The Lancers would not give in, however, as Cabral and Carens teamed up for two kills to cut the score 16-13. Lasell freshman Odina Ellis (Providence, R.I.) answered the run with a blast to the court to force the visitors to take their final timeout of the set. The Lasers remained composed throughout the final plays, as Ellis and sophomore Taylor Tiezzi (Meriden, Conn.) soared above the net to deny the visitors a chance at the match victory. Tiezzi served up Lasell's last point, as Longley forced set five with a kill.

Set-five action featured a slow start for the home team, as Lancers' freshman Alexandra Nolan (Melrose, Mass.) served up the opening three points. The Lasers, however, survived six ties before a kill by Tiezzi gave the Lasers a promising 13-11 lead lead. With Tiezzi on the serve, two Worcester State errors sealed the deal for the Lasers, as they took the final set 15-11.

Lasell will travel to Boston, Mass. for a local GNAC tri-match with Anna Maria and Emmanuel on Saturday, October 10 with first-match set for 12:00 p.m., while the Lancers head to Becker College on Thursday, October 8. At 7:00 p.m.
