Worcester State Tops Lasell, 3-0 in Women's Volleyball

NEWTON, Mass. (10/7/14) – The Lasell College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 non-conference decision to the visiting Lancers of Worcester State on Tuesday evening. The victory helped Worcester State run their winning streak to 12 consecutive matches, as the Lancers improved to 17-2 overall. Lasell slipped to 3-19 with the loss. The Lancers straight set victory was by scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-15.

Odina Ellis (Providence, R.I.) led Lasell with nine kills, while Kathy Cameron (Boston, Mass.) and Meredith Eagan (North Andover, Mass.) each chipped in seven kills on the night. Taylor Tiezzi (Meriden, Conn.) handed out 23 assists in the match, while Alyssa Nahigian (Coventry, R.I.) and Caitlyn Garcia (Moreno Valley, Calif.) each tallied 13 digs in the contest for the Lasers.

Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, Mass.) notched a match-high 17 kills to pace the Lancers, who combined to hit .209 for the match. Jamika Townsend (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Meghan Deighan (Lynnfield, Mass.) each chipped in nine kills and Jennifer Cabral (Swansea, Mass.) added seven kills for Worcester State. Amanda Lewis (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) directed the attack to the tune of 37 assists, while also posting 15 digs and Townsend added 15 digs as well.

Lasell built an early 15-12 lead in the opening set behind three kills each from Ellis and Eagan, but WSU responded closing out the set on a 13-6 run boosted by three kills by Jasper in the run to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Lancers opened the second set building a 6-0 lead on their way to their biggest lead of the set at 14-6. Lasell closed with two points at 19-17, but the visitors answered by shutting down the rally and collecting the 25-20 win and taking a 2-0 lead.

The third set was tight in the early going, as the two teams traded the lead several times and deadlocking at 8-8. Jasper stepped up for the Lancers the rest of the way, recording six kills and sparking a 17-7 run to close out the set 25-15 and the match.

Worcester State will be back in action on Saturday October 11th when they face-off with Salve Regina and Clark University beginning at 1:00 p.m. Lasell will travel to Union College for a two-day tournament where they will square off with the host Ductchwomen, Skidmore, Susquehanna, and Bridegwater St.
