Smith College Comeback Foils Women's Volleyball in Home Match

NEWTON, Mass. (9/9/14) – The Lasell College women's volleyball team lost a close 3-1 contest with visiting Smith College on Tuesday evening. The Lasers slipped to 0-9 with the loss while Smith ran their record to 3-2 overall.

Freshmen Odina Ellis (Providence, R.I.) finished with a team-high nine kills for Lasell while senior Kathy Cameron (Boston, Mass.) and freshmen Michelle Canestro (Castleton, N.Y.) each chipped in six kills in the match. Freshmen Taylor Tiezzi (Meriden, Conn.) handed out a team-high 25 assists and freshmen Caitlyn Garcia (Moreno Valley, Calif.) and sophomore Cassandra Stout (Plymouth, Mass.) added 22 and 16 digs respectively for the Lasers.

Lasell took the opening set 25-20, running off 10 consecutive points to turn a 9-5 deficit into a 15-9 lead. Smith was able to get within three points late at 22-19, but the Lasers closed out the set to take a 1-0 advantage in the match.

Smith College held a slim lead in the second set at 7-5, breaking the set wide open with a 10-1 run to take a 17-6 lead enroute to a 25-10 victory to tie the match at 1-1. The third set began with the two teams trading points, leaving the match tied at 8-8. Smith claimed four of the next five points to go in front, 12-9 then holding off Lasell the test of the way to earn the set win 25-19, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.

Lasell jumped out to an early 10-4 lead aided by a pair of service aces from Cassandra Stout, but Smith battled back slowly, eventually tying the score at 17-17. After the teams traded points tying the score at 18-18, Lasell reeled off three more points to take a 21-18 lead. Smith came right back tying the set again at 22-22. The teams found themselves tied four more times, including at 26-26 before Smith took advantage of a pair of Lasell errors to collect the 28-26 win and take the match 3-1.

Lasell will travel to Regis College on Thursday September 11th at 7:00 p.m. for their next match.
