Women's Volleyball Grabs Key Victories over Mount Ida and St. Joseph's (Me)

NEWTON, Mass. (10/26/13) – The Lasell College women's volleyball team picked up a pair of important Great Northeast Athletic Conference victories in a tri-match on Saturday afternoon. Lasell defeated Mount Ida College 3-0 in the first match of the day, St. Joseph's College of Maine claimed a 3-1 victory against Mount Ida in the second match and Lasell captured a 3-1 result against St. Joseph's in the today's final match. Lasell is 16-11 overall in 2013 and finishes their GNAC slate at 7-4, St. Joseph's stands at 19-9 on the year and the Monks are 7-3 in GNAC action with one conference match remaining. Mount Ida dropped to 3-26 for the year and 0-10 in league action and has one match left in their conference schedule.

Lasell 3 – Mount Ida 0

The Lasers defeated Mount Ida in straight sets, winning 25-12, 25-23 and 25-18. Abigail Rollins (N. Caldwell, N.J.) and Sharisse Scott-Rawlins (Brockton, Mass.) each finished with six kills in the match and Rollins added seven digs. Alyssa Nahigian (Coventry, R.I.) chipped in with 12 assists; Jordan Seid (Rowland Heights, Calif.) tallied 11 digs and Heather Longley (N. Granby, Conn.) finished with three total blocks.

Mount Ida received six kills from Kellie Schroeder (N. Grafton, Mass.) and five kills from Hillary Kostner (Corona, Calif.) in the loss. Nicole Peixoto (New Bedford, Mass.) recorded a match-high 23 assists and Kelcey Koolman (Bedford, N.H.) notched a match-high 19 digs.

The Lasers utilized a strong defensive presence at the net, finishing with 6 total blocks to help force the Mustangs into 29 attacking errors.

St. Joseph's (Maine) 3 – Mount Ida 1

The Monks handed the Mustangs their second loss of the day, pulling out a four set victory by scores of 25-10, 17-25, 25-14 and 25-11. Felicia Wachowiak (Milton, N.H.) led a potent St. Joseph's attack with 13 kills, Holly Bannister (Cumberland, Maine) and Alli Hollander (Thermal, Calif.) added seven and six kills respectively for the Monks who recorded a .284 hitting percentage in the match. Abbie McPhee (Epping, N.H.) was stellar defensively tallying a match-high 22 digs and Mariah Hebert (Biddeford, Maine) directed the Monks offense with 28 assists.

Mount Ida received a strong effort from Hillary Kostner who posted a match-high 14 kills while Kellie Schroeder added five kills in the contest. Kostner added 12 digs for the Mustangs, and Kelcey Koolman posted a team-high 18 digs.

Lasell 3 – St. Joseph's (Maine) 1

The Lasers earned a key GNAC victory over St. Joseph's in the afternoon's third match winning in four sets 25-16, 19-25, 25-15 and 25-18. Abigail Rollins and Sharisse Scott-Rawlins each tallied 14 kills in the victory for Lasell, while Heather Longley and Kathy Cameron (Boston, Mass.) added nine and eight kills respectively. Rollins and Jordan Seid each finished with 17 digs for the Lasers while Scott-Rawlins and Anna Feeter (Peterboro, N.H.) each chipped in 13 digs. Scott-Rawlins served four aces in the match, Alyssa Nahigian handed out a season-high 42 assists and Heather Longley tallied three total blocks. Felicia Wachowiak totaled 13 kills for the second consecutive match for St. Joseph's, Shadai Gosselin (Somersworth, N.H.) and Victoria Huntley (Ellsworth, Maine) tallied seven and six kills apiece. Gosselin finished with 10 digs in the contest, while Abbie McPhee posted a team-high 16 digs. Mariah Hebert dished out 27 assists as the Monks were unable to replicate their efficient hitting attack from their first match and struggled on serve receive yielding nine aces to Lasell.

Lasell will wrap up their home schedule on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. when they host Brandeis University. St. Joseph's College has a non-conference match at Framingham St. on Tuesday October 29 at 7:00 p.m. before closing out their regular season schedule with a GNAC match against Johnson and Wales on Saturday November 2nd at 1:00 p.m. Mount Ida will host Salem State on Tuesday October 29th at 6:00 p.m. before heading to Anna Maria for their GNAC finale at 4:00 p.m. on Friday November 1st
