Women's Volleyball Earns Sweep of Suffolk on Senior Day

NEWTON, Mass. (10/19/13) – The Lasell College women's volleyball team swept Suffolk University, 3-0 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match on Saturday afternoon. The Lasers came out on top in three very closely contested sets, winning by identical scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-21. Lasell improved to 14-10 overall and 5-3 in GNAC contests while Suffolk slipped to 13-13 on the year and 6-6 in conference play.

Sharisse Scott-Rawlins (Brockton, Mass.) led the way for Lasell with 11 kills and nine digs in the match, while Heather Longley (No. Granby, Conn.) added 6 kills and 4 total blocks on the day. Marisa Visocchi (Whitman, Mass.) keyed the defensive effort for Lasell with nine digs of her own, while Alyssa Nahigian (Coventry, R.I.) handed out a match-best 29 assists in the victory.

Tori Brillaud (No. Andover, Mass.) finished with a match-high 16 kills for Suffolk and Savannah Carpenter (Weston, Conn.) added 8 kills in the loss. Haley Atkinson (Branford, Conn.) tallied a match-high 18 digs for the Rams, while Brillaud and Colbey Kennedy (Old Lyme, Conn.) chipped in with 14 and 11 digs respectively.

Lasell claimed a back-and-forth opening set scoring eight of the last 11 points after trailing 18-17 to grab the 25-21 win. The Lasers ran out to leads of 11-4 and 15-9 to open the second set but the Rams would answer, clawing their way back to tie the set at 15-15. The two teams traded points until the action was tied at 20-20 before Lasell closed with five of the last six points to come out on top.

The third set was no different than the first two as the nip-and-tuck affair saw neither team led by more than three points and Suffolk holding a 16-15 lead. The Lasers responded with six straight points to grab a 21-16 lead and held on for the 25-21 win.

Lasell will visit Rivier University on Wednesday October 23rd for a 7:30 p.m. GNAC match while Suffolk will be back in action on Saturday October 26th when they host Norwich and Albertus Magnus in a conference tri-match beginning at 12:00 p.m.
