Women’s Volleyball Volunteers at 2013 Boston Heart Walk

BOSTON, MASS. (9/12/13) – The Lasell College women's volleyball team took advantage of a rare free weekend to volunteer their time at the Boston Heart Walk on Saturday September 7th. The annual event brought together over 10,000 people to participate in the one of three events, a six mile walk, a two mile walk and a one mile walk to raise money for the American Heart Association.

"Participating in the Heart Walk is something we did my freshmen year" commented senior co-captain Marisa Visocchi, adding "the last two years we have been on preseason trips to Virginia and California and haven't been able to be a part of it, so it was nice to get back to participating in such a great event."

The Lasers women's volleyball players walked as a part of the Brigham and Women's Hospital team, a connection they established through their head coach, Mary Tom. After checking in upon arriving at the Heart Walk site in Boston on the Charles River, the women's team was able to walk around and see some of the other groups participating.

Senior co-captain Anna Feeter said "We had a chance to see all of the other groups supporting the walk, and it was really rewarding knowing that we were a part of that walk and that even just our team of 16 girls could make a difference! I think all of the girls will remember this for a long time."

"We had a lot of fun" added Visocchi, saying "I think being a part of events like the Heart Walk are great for our program. Helping to raise money for a good cause and being willing to help people without getting anything in return is a great way to remind us the importance of selflessness in our lives."

The Lasers will again be hosting their annual "Dig Pink" event on Family and Friends Weekend, when they host Suffolk University at 2:00 p.m. "Dig Pink" events are hosted by volleyball programs all across the country to raise money for breast cancer research. Lasell will also be volunteering their time again this year at the Hyde Community Center in Newton, Mass. helping with their annual Haunted House on October 27th. The ladies will help create the Haunted House and then staff it in an effort to provide safe and enjoyable Halloween fun in the community.
