Track and Field Teams Open The Indoor Season at Smith Invitational

Northampton, MA--The men's and women's track and field teams opened up the indoor season this weekend at the Smith Winter Classic. Both teams had strong performances in their first outing and a few new Lasell records were set.

On the men's side, first year Kyle Northrop (Bellingham, MA) earned the second fastest time of the day in the 1000 meter race with a time of 2:51.57.  He also placed third in the 5000 meter race with a time of 17:03.19.  Senior Jean Leger (Waltham, MA) tied for third place, behind jumpers from Amherst and Keene State, in the triple jump with a distance of 11.93m.

For the women, sophomore Samantha Peck, set a Lasell record in the women's high jump and the long jump.  She earned first place at the meet in the high jump with a jump of 1.57 meters.  Peck also shattered her own record of 4.76 meters in the long jump with a jump of 5.03 meters which was good enough for second place.  She also came in second in the triple jump with a jump of 10.59 meters.  Also setting a new Lasell record, was sophomore Solange Carpenter who took second place in the 1000m run with a time of 3:32.05.  Her time beat a longstanding record of 3:33.3 previously held by Kalya McKenna '09. Also for the women, Sophomore Chelsea Zeig (West Nyack, NY) made a strong return to the shotput, throwing a distance of 10.1 meters which is only .5 off of her current Lasell record.

Next up for both teams is the Reggie Payou Meet at Brandeis University on Saturday, December 10th
