Newton, MA - The Lasell University Lasers took a 2-1 victory over the Wentworth Leopards on Sunday, moving to 1-1 on the season. The Leopards are now 0-2.
The Lasers started off fast, scoring in the fifth minute when Evelyn DiFiore put home a loose ball in front of the net. But the Lasers lead was short lived as the Leopards tied things up a little over 10 minutes later.
A critical moment in the match came in the 32nd minute when Laser goalie Elizabeth DaSilva played a ball with her hands while outside the box. This resulted in a red card, utting the Lasers down a player for nearly 60 minutes.
But instead of going with a defensive strategy, the Lasers kept the offensive pressure on, taking the lead just six minutes later on a Grace Rava goal assisted by Michelina D'Agostino. This gave the Lasers the 2-1 lead that they would take into halftime.
The second half was where the being down a player showed, as the Leopards outshot the Lasers 9-3. But stellar play by goalie Lataya Simmons kept everything out of the net, and gave the Lasers the 2-1 victory. She stopped all four shots that she faced.
Up next - The Lasers will host conference foe JWU on Wednesday at 4pm. It is a rematch of the past two GNAC Championship games.
