WSOC: Lasers top GNAC opponent Simmons; O’Guin and Speight score

NEWTON, Mass. – The Lasell University women's soccer team defeated Simmons University in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match Saturday afternoon at Taylor Field, 2-0.

The Lasers improve to 4-7 overall and 4-2 in conference. The Sharks drop to 0-9-1 overall and 0-6 in conference.

Freshman Bobbi O'Guin (Newton, Mass.) scored the first of the two Laser goals for her third on the season. Sophomore Serena Speight (Biddeford, Maine) scored the other as she tallied her fourth on the season. Junior Korynne Provenzano (Stratham, N.H.) led the home team's defensive line and prevented the visiting Sharks from recording a shot. The Lasers finished with 36 total shots and 20 on net.

The Lasers opened up the scoring with 10 minutes left in the first half. O'Guin ran down the left wing into the Sharks defensive third, cut the ball back to her right foot for a strike outside the 18-yard box and scored in the upper-left corner of the net.

Simmons held its ground for the majority of the second half and kept the Lasers from scoring at all until late in the game. With four seconds left in the game Speight found herself at the top of the box, turned and lifted the ball over the keeper with her left foot. The Lasers would come out on top 2-0.

The Lasers play next week at Suffolk University on Wednesday, October 9 at 7 p.m. The Sharks will look to bounce back next Tuesday, October 8 as they host Emmanuel in a conference match-up at 4 p.m.
