WSOC: Strong second half leads Lasell past Anna Maria; O’Guin leads Lasers

NEWTON, Mass. – Freshman Bobbi O'Guin (Newton, Mass.) tallied a goal and two assists Saturday afternoon as Lasell University defeated Anna Maria College, 6-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer match at Taylor Field.

The home team had a 14-1 advantage in shots in the first half but led only 1-0 at the break. Lasell's offense came alive in the second half, scoring five goals to put away the victory. The Lasers improve to 3-6 overall and 3-1 in GNAC matches, while Anna Maria falls to 3-5-1 and 0-3.

Junior Sophia DiPlacido (Hudson, Mass.) scored the only goal of the first half for Lasell, knocking in a rebound off a shot by O'Guin with just over five minutes left if the half. Lasell missed an earlier opportunity to get on the board but Anna Maria sophomore keeper Rachel Matloff (Grafton, Mass.) made a nice save on a Laser penalty kick.

The Lasers exploded for three goals in an eight-minute span early in the second half. O'Guin started the rally five minutes into the half, finishing off a lead pass from senior Caitlin Rotonnelli (Meredith, N.H.) with a shot to the upper left. Four minutes later, O'Guin returned the favor, setting up Rotonnelli for a goal as the Lasers extended the lead to 3-0. Junior Korynne Provenzano (Stratham, N.H.) finished off the surge with an unassisted goal in the 59th minute to make it 4-0.

Freshman Reagan Cola (West Boothbay Harbor, Maine) added a goal for the Lasers with 13 minutes remaining when she was taken down in the box and scored on the ensuing penalty kick, recording her first career goal. Sophomore Maddie Burke (Pelham, Mass.) rounded out the scoring in the final minute with her first goal of the season, assisted by junior Narissa Libby (Gorham, Maine).

Matloff wound up with 14 saves for the Amcats as Lasell finished with a 36-3 advantage in shots. Sophomore Angela Sanzari (North Haven, Conn.) earned the win in goal for Lasell, making two stops.

The Lasers are back in action on Wednesday, October 2, with GNAC match-up at Johnson & Wales University at 7 p.m. Anna Maria also plays again on Wednesday, visiting the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff.
