WSOC: Lasell rallies past Albertus Magnus in GNAC opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Lasell University scored two goals in a nine-minute stretch of the second half Friday evening to pull out a 2-1 victory over Albertus Magnus College in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer opener for both schools at Celentano Field.

Lasell posted its first win of the season, improving to 1-4 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while Albertus Magnus drops to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the GNAC.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Lasell came out and out-shot the hosts 16-0 in the second half. Sophomore Serena Speight (Biddeford, Maine) finally tied the score in the 66th minute, with an assist from senior Melissa Vasquez (Pawtucket, R.I.), and freshman Kat Fortes (Boston, Mass.) tallied the go-ahead goal and eventual game-winner in the 74th minute.

Lasell finished with a 22-5 advantage in shots, and each team made three corner kicks. Senior Cassidy Scofield had a strong game in the Falcons net, finishing with 11 saves. Sophomore Angela Sanzari (North Haven, Conn.) earned the victory in the Laser net, making one save.

The Lasers return home for the home opener at Taylor Field next Wednesday, September 18, against GNAC for Emmanuel College at 4 p.m. Albertus Magnus is home again on Sunday, September 15, hosting Northern Vermont University-Lyndon, beginning at noon.
