WSOC: Tufts powers past Lasell

SOMERVILLE, Mass. – The Tufts University women's soccer team proved too strong for Lasell University Tuesday afternoon, powering past the Lasers 8-0 in a non-conference contest at Kraft Field.

Junior Sophie Lloyd collected two goals and three assists for the Jumbos, who received votes in this week's United Soccer Coaches national division 3 poll. Tufts improves to 2-1 on the season, while the Lasers fall to 0-4.

Tufts jumped on the board early when sophomore Kylie Metcalf tallied her first career goal in the second minute.

Lasell attempted to respond in the 21st minute as they earned a corner kick after freshman Bobbi O'Guin (Newton, Mass.) fired a shot wide of the Tufts goal. Junior Narissa Libby (Gorham, Maine) took the corner kick which was deflected away by keeper Hayley Bernstein. The deflection found Libby who tried to set another ball towards the goal but the ball went over the end line.

The Jumbos would double their lead in the 26th minute, when Lloyd sent a pass towards the middle of the field to classmate Liz Reed, who fired home a left footed shot. Exactly one minute later, Lloyd found an opening in the middle of the field after Metcalf found her from the left sideline, and her shot gave Tufts a 3-0 advantage. Freshman Claire Wilkinson sent a cross towards classmate Margaux Ameer who quickly chipped a ball over the goalkeeper for her first career goal, and the Jumbos led 4-0 at the break.

Tufts came out in the second half on the attack as senior Tally Clark sent a cross to Lloyd near the back post to finish off her second goal of the contest. Freshman Madeleine Pero tacked on two goals less than five minutes apart, and senior Paige Vigliotta rounded out the scoring with her first goal of the season in the 81st minute.

Lasell senior keepers Kyla Bragg (Sanford, Maine) and Hayden Wheeler (Hubbardston, Mass.) split time in the contest and combined to make nine saves.

The Lasers will wrap-up their five-game road trip by traveling to Albertus Magnus College Friday, September 13, for the Great Northeast Athletic Conference opener at 5:30 p.m. The Jumbos are next in action on Thursday against WPI at Kraft Field.
