WSOC: Lasell falls in season opener at Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. – The Lasell University women's soccer team dropped its season opener Friday afternoon, falling to Gordon College, 4-1, at the Gordon Quad field.

The Lasers held a 1-0 lead at halftime, but surrendered four second-half goals in the setback.

Sophomore keeper Angela Sanzari (North Haven, Conn.) had a busy day in the Laser net, and finished with 13 saves. Junior Sophia DiPlacido (Hudson, Mass.) scored the lone goal for Lasell, with an assist from sophomore Serena Speight (Biddeford, Maine).

DiPlacido's goal in the first two minutes of the game gave the Lasers an early lead. They maintained the advantage throughout the first half despite being out-shot 14-3 in the opening 45 minutes.

The Fighting Scots came back to take the lead with a pair of goals three minutes apart midway through the second half. The hosts tacked on another goal in the 78th minute and rounded out the scoring in the 85th minute.

Gordon finished with a 26-11 margin in shots, and a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Lasers will play again on Sunday, September 1, at Endicott College at 1 p.m.
