Lasell Women’s Soccer falls to Western Connecticut in non-conference play

NEWTON, Mass. – The Lasell College women's soccer team was shut out 1-0 by Western Connecticut State University Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference match on Taylor Field.

WestConn moves on with a six-game winning streak and an 8-6 overall record, while the Lasers had their seven-game winning streak snapped and drop to 7-4. The Colonials also defeated Lasell last year by the same score.

Ssophomore Osheonna Israel (South Windsor, Conn.) scored in the right bottom corner at 34:43 for an unassisted goal, putting the Colonials up 1-0 in the first half. The Lasers struggled to break through, and WestConn's goalkeeper sophomore Alexis Lainchbury (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) made one save.

The Lasers picked it up in the second half outshooting WestConn 6-5, looking to get a goal on the board. Lasell came close when senior Carly Zdanek (Newton, N.J.) took a high shot off a corner kick ball 15 minutes into the second half. The Colonials came close to gaining a 2-0 lead at when freshman Amina Bailey (East Hartford, Conn.) shot the ball toward the right bottom corner, hitting it off the post.

Lasell freshman goalie Angela Sanzari (North Haven, Conn.) made three saves. Freshman Karly Martin (Bristol, Conn.) was substituted in goal for Lainchbury in the second half, contributing to the shut out with five saves for the Colonials. The Colonials also had strong defensive performances by juniors Jasmine Grey (Naugatuck, Conn.), Courtney Ravo (Bethel, Conn.), and junior Jenna Barron (New Milford, Conn.), and freshman Lillian Daniels (Bethel, Conn.),

WestConn held a 10-9 advantage in overall shots, while both teams equaled out 2-2 in corner kicks and 8-8 in fouls.

The Lasers will play the Pride of Regis College next for their Senior Day on Saturday at 12 noon, while WestConn takes on the Keene State College Owls on Saturday at 1 p.m.
