Roger Williams Edges Women's Soccer 1-0

BRISTOL, R.I. (10/16/17) – The Lasell women's soccer team dropped a narrow non-conference decision to Roger Williams University, 1-0, on Monday evening. The Lasers drop to 8-5 overall, while the Hawks improve to 9-6-2.

The Hawks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just three minutes into the game. Sinead Hanley (Quincy, Mass.) secured possession of the ball in the middle of the box before the ball got away from her and away from senior keeper Sarah LaClair (Belchertown, Mass.). The ball rolled towards the goal, with a Laser defender trying to clear the ball away, but a miscue rolled in for an own goal as the ultimate game-winner.

Lasell had two close calls to score not too far after. Casey Meissner (Sandwich, Mass.) sent a through pass up the middle to Melissa Vasquez (Pawtucket, R.I.) in the ninth minute. Vasquez booted a shot but was stopped by Hawk keeper Alexis Wright (Bennington, Vt.). Then two minutes later, Meissner had a chance of her own with a shot from the right side. Her attempt just bounced off the left post back towards Wright, who was able to secure the ball before a second shot could be taken.

In the 20th minute, the Lasers had another opportunity to tie the game but failed to capitalize. Carly Zdanek (Newton, N.J.) had a one-on-one chance with the keeper after a clearing attempt for the Hawks bounced off of Zdanek and back towards the goal. Zdanek made her way into the box, but was stopped before she could get the shot off.

The Hawks defense picked up in the second half, limiting the offensive chances for Lasell, as the Lasers found it difficult to put a clean shot on net. Though the Hawks were limited in their chances to score, the defensive effort was still enough to preserve the shutout.

LaClair had two stops for Lasell, while Wright had a season-high nine saves in the win.

Lasell hosts Norwich University on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. for a GNAC matchup, while Roger Williams heads to Western New England University tomorrow afternoon.
