Western Connecticut Edges Women's Soccer 1-0

DANBURY, CT –  The Lasell women's soccer team couldn't find the back of the net in a non-conference affair against Western Connecticut State University, and dropped a 1-0 decision to the Colonials on Monday night at the Westside Athletic Complex. The Lasers drop to 1-3 while the Colonials remain undefeated and roll to 5-0.

The Colonials broke the ice with the contest's lone goal in the 30th minute of play. Junior Lucy Daniels (Bethel, CT) took a pass from senior Andrea DeVoe (Farmington, CT) and lofted a long shot over the outstretched arms of the Lasers goalkeeper that sailed just underneath the crossbar. It marked the first goal of the season for Daniels.

The hosts controlled the majority of play, outshooting the visitors, 14-5, while also maintaining an edge in corner kicks, 4-1. WestConn had numerous chances to widen the lead throughout the contest. However, stellar goaltending performances from senior Sarah LaClair (Belchertown, MA) and back-up sophomore Hayden Wheeler (Hubbardstown, MA) kept the Lasers within striking distance.

LaClair suffered the tough loss for the Lasers, finishing with three saves, while sliding to 1-3 overall. Senior goalkeeper Jillian Fernandez (Columbia, CT) stopped one shot, improving to 4-0 for the Colonials.

The Lasers return to GNAC action on Wednesday, September 13 when they travel to Albertus Magnus College. This marks the first time the Lasers and Falcons will meet since the 2016 GNAC championship match, with kickoff set for 6:00 p.m. WestConn returns to action for its Little East Conference opener when they travel to Southern Maine on Saturday at Noon.
