Women's Soccer Blanks Simmons 2-0

BOSTON, Mass. – The Lasell College women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to 10 straight with a 2-0 victory over host Simmons College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match this afternoon at Daly Field in Brighton, Mass. The Lasers improve to 9-2-1 overall and 6-0-1 in league play, while the Sharks fall to 5-6-1 and 4-3-0.

The teams were fairly even with Lasell owning a 15-12 shooting margin and the teams being knotted at 3-3 on corner kicks.

The Lasers were quick to get on the scoreboard, taking a 1-0 edge just 2:26 into the contest when senior forward Megan Cullen (Marblehead, Mass.) carried the ball into the right side of the box and fired a shot that came off the goalie and back to her. Cullen collected the rebound and put the ball inside the far post for her sixth tally of the year.

Simmons looked to get on the board in the 23rd minute when sophomore midfielder Cíara Forde (Quincy, Mass.) evaded the keeper and had her shot blocked. The Sharks offensive front converged in front of the net, but were unable to dislodge the ball from between a Lasell defender's legs and she sat on the ground until the keeper could take possession. The Lasers took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.

Lasell increased its lead to 2-0 when sophomore forward Carly Zdanek's (Newton, N.J.) shot in the middle of the box deflected off a Simmons' defender and found the back of the net on the right side at the 55:58 mark of the second stanza. The marker was her team-high seventh of the season.

Junior keeper Sarah LaClair (Belchertown, Mass.) stopped all six shots she faced for the Lasers to post her fifth shutout of the season and 17th of her career. Junior goalie Casey Halle (Watertown, Mass.) made eight saves for the Sharks.

Lasell travels to Northfield, Vt. On Monday, October 10 to play GNAC opponent Norwich University at 4:00 p.m. Simmons returns to action on Monday as well, when it heads to Newton, Mass. for a 12:00 p.m. match with GNAC rival Mount Ida College.
