Women’s Soccer Ties Colby-Sawyer 0-0

NEWTON, Mass. (9/16/15) – After two periods of scoreless overtime, the Lasell College women's soccer team tied Colby-Sawyer College 0-0 in a non-conference battle at Taylor Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Lasers shift to 2-2-1 overall, while the Chargers move to 1-1-2.

The Lasers applied offensive pressure early on, but were unsuccessful against the Chargers' defense. The first scoring opportunity came from the visitors ten minutes in, as junior Rachel Quaye (Westminster, Mass.) dished a perfect pass to junior Kelsey Campbell (Upton, Mass.) who in turn took a blast on net. However, Lasell junior defender Mack Kingman (East Bridgewater, Mass.) took a step in and cleared the ball out of trouble to remain at 0-0.

With 14:25 to go in the first half, Lasell freshman Erika Badger (Scituate, Mass.) carried the ball up the left field flank and took a crack on net, where Colby-Sawyer net minder Karley Hamilton (Bradford, Vt.) came out for a bobbled save. Junior Megan Cullen (Amesbury, Mass.) was there to grab the rebound, but misfired a shot just wide.

Lasell came out of the halftime break with energy and aggression, relaying back-to-back shots on frame that were snagged by Hamilton.  In the 79th minute, Quaye was played into space for a breakaway situation for the Chargers, but was immediately denied the point when freshman keeper Carly Heintz (Simsbury, Conn.) came out for a big save for the home team.

Junior Devon Day (Hartland, Vt.) wasted little time getting to net in the first overtime period, taking a shot from just inside the 18 yard box 2:52 in. The Lasers nearly had the game-winner in the books when freshman Sabrina Morais (Arlington, Mass.) snuck a shot on net 2:08 into the final period that skimmed off Colby-Sawyer's goalpost.

With 4:42 left in regulation, freshman Carly Zdanek (Newton, N.J.) capitalized on a failed clear from the Chargers' defense, and bolted past all defenders to fire a shot just wide of the net, ending on a 0-0 decision for both teams.

The Lasers owned a 22-7 advantage in shots on the day and conceded zero corner kicks, as Colby-Sawyer gave up seven corner kicks. Heintz (1-0-1) had four stops for the home team, while Hamilton (1-1-2) saved all nine shots on net for the visitors.

Both teams resume play on Saturday, September 19. The Lasers will be put to the test as they welcome Emmanuel College for a GNAC contest scheduled for 12:00 p.m., while the Chargers head to Castine, Maine for a 4:00 p.m. game against Maine Maritime Academy.
