Zdanek Nets First Career Game Winner as Women's Soccer Tops Keene St. 2-1

KEENE, N.H.--The Lasell College women's soccer team scored twice in the first half, then withstood a rally from Keene State in a 2-1 win that ended early due to thunder and lightning in the greater Keene area. The win gives the Lasers their first of the season at 1-2 overall, while the Owls dip to 1-2 on the year with the loss.

The Lasers struck 9:27 into the contest, as a ball over the top from junior Devon Day (Hartsdale, Vt.) played in junior Megan Cullen (Amesbury, Mass.), who curled her third goal of the season past KSC goalie Danielle Warhall.

Freshman Carly Zdanek (Newton, N.J.) made it 2-0 five minutes before halftime with an unassisted rocket to the frame, her first of her college career.

Warhall kept the Owls in the contest, diving to make a stop four minutes into the second half to deny Day on an attempt of a third goal. The Owls got on the scoreboard in the 55th minute when Brittany Tolla's cross was knocked down by Morgan Kathan and fell to Ellen Granata, who knocked in her first of the year from point blank range to halve the deficit.

Owl's Patricia Norton's effort from distance was wide in the 71st minute, and with 16:44 left on the clock, the referee signaled to pause the game as the thunder and lightning approached.

After approximately a 35 minute wait, the game was officially finished, having passed the mandatatory 70 minute mark.

Freshman goalkeeper Carly Heintz (Simsbury, Conn.) registered her first start and win of her collegiate career, saving two of the three shots faced on net.

Lasell opens up their Great Northeast Athletic Conference schedule on Saturday, September 12 at Suffolk at 1:45 p.m., while Keene State hits the road on the same day to Colby-Sawyer for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
