Corsairs Comeback Downs Women's Soccer 3-1

NEWTON, Mass. (9/24/14) – The Lasell College women's soccer team conceded three second half goals against the visiting Corsairs of UMass-Dartmouth to fall 3-1 in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Taylor Field. Lasell slipped to 4-4 on the season with the loss while UMD improved to 3-4 after their comeback victory.

Bridget Lynch (Dover, N.H.) scored her ninth goal of the season while Megan Cullen (Amesbury, Mass.) tallied her fourth assist of the year in the loss. Leah Pappalardo (Marshfield, Mass.) made a pair of saves while recording the loss in goal for the Lasers.

Maura Gonsalves (Dartmouth, Mass.), Megan Cole (Mansfield, Mass.) and Erica Farias (Tiverton, R.I.) each scored for the visiting Corsairs and keeper Madison Boucher (Southampton, Mass.) stopped six shots to earn the win in goal for UMD.

Lasell took a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute when Megan Cullen drove the endline and crossed the ball back to a waiting Bridget Lynch who drove a low strike past Boucher into the lower right corner of the net. The Lasers created several other chances in the opening 45 minutes of action, but were unable to add to their lead.

The Corsairs equalized in the 57th minute when a long clearance by UMass-Dartmouth rolled deep into the Lasell defensive half and Gonsalves touched the ball away from Pappalardo and finished into the open net, knotting the score at 1-1. UMD capitalized on the momentum and added their second goal of the match less than a minute later when a failed clearance by the Lasers was headed back and landed at the feet of Megan Cole who struck a ball into the lower right corner of the net to put the visitors in front 2-1. Lasell began pushing forward trying to pull back level, but UMD added another on the counterattack when a long ball from Maggie McCormack (Saugus, Mass.) put Erica Farias in on goal with a breakaway which she coolly slotted home to make it a 3-1 lead in the 79th minute and send the visitors on to victory.

Lasell will return to action on Saturday September 27th when they travel to Emmanuel College for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match against the Saints at 3:00 p.m. UMass-Dartmouth will host UMass-Boston at 12:00 p.m. in a Little East match-up.
