NEWTON, Mass. (10/9/13) – The Lasell College women's soccer team returned to their winning ways with a 1-0 victory over the visiting Sharks of Simmons College in a rematch of the 2012 Great Northeast Athletic Conference tournament championship match. Lasell improved to 8-2-1 on the season and 5-0-1 in the GNAC, while Simmons fell to 6-6 overall and 3-3 in conference matches.
Bridget Lynch (Dover, N.H.) scored the lone goal of the game for Lasell, tallying her sixteenth goal of the season.
The two sides played a scoreless first half, with Lasell controlling possession and the flow of the action. The host held a 10-2 advantage in shots and a 5-0 edge in corner kicks through the opening 45 minutes of play, but some stout goalkeeping by Briana Hayes (Manorville, N.Y.) kept the match scoreless. Hayes made eight of her nine saves in the first half, including one stretch where she stonewalled Bridget Lynch on three straight shots in a six second span.
The game turned more to the visitors favor in the second half as Simmons held a 7-4 edge in shots and this time it was the Lasers freshmen goalkeeper Gina Grimes (Pelham, N.H.) who came up with four saves in the second half.
In the 82nd minute of action, sophomore Molly Masiero (Richmond, Mass.) found room behind the Sharks back line, springing Bridget Lynch for a breakaway opportunity which the junior finished to give Lasell a 1-0 lead.
Lasell held on and Grimes posted her second shutout in as many starts to claim the win while Hayes was saddled with the loss despite a strong effort in net for Simmons.
Lasell will return to the pitch on Saturday October 12th when the visit Johnson and Wales for a 3:30 p.m. kick-off before returning home to face Norwich on Monday October 14th at 3:30 p.m. Simmons will return home for three straight games when they will face Albertus Magnus on the 12th at 4:00 p.m. followed by 1:00 p.m. kick-offs against the University of St. Joseph and St. Joseph's (Maine on October 14th and 19th respectively.
