Newton, MA-- St. Joseph's College of Maine women's soccer brought Lasell College's 12-game unbeaten streak, as well as an 18-game undefeated home spell, to a halt on Saturday, stunning the Lasers with a 1-0 win.
Prior to today's contest, the Lasers boasted an unbeaten 10-0 GNAC record, and a 15-0-3 home record dating back to November 1, 2009. The defeat also marks the first in conference play for Lasell since an October 11, 2010 loss to Emerson College (2-1) and drops Lasell's overall record to 11-3-1 (10-1 GNAC). The Monks improve to 6-4-3 (5-3-3 GNAC) this season with the upset victory.
Saturday's contest also marked Senior Day for Lasell's seven women's soccer athletes playing in their final season with the Blue & White. Jordynn Frollo (Uxbridge, MA), Liz McGeoy (Doylestown, PA), Elizabeth Stickley (Mashpee, MA), Jessica Taylor (Standish, ME), Meredith Hessler (Middletown, RI), Margaret Carvahlo (Swansea, MA) and Molly Clarke (Berlin, CT) were honored pre-game to recognize the accomplishments set forth by them during their tenure with the women's soccer program.
Sixty-six minutes of scoreless soccer followed, though the Lasers pounded hard at the Monks net, outshooting the visitors 30-8 in the contest. St. Joseph's goalie Jacqueline Lorenzen (Windham, ME) had a phenomenal showing with 13 saves en route to the shutout victory. Lorenzen floundered just once in the contest, at 65:17, which could have been Lasell's break out moment when Sam Peck (Woodbury, CT) got a shot at the open goal, but the Monks defense picked up the slack with a team save.
Less than two minutes after Lasell's close call, the visitors capitalized after multiple put-backs to take the lead. Just before the 66 minute mark, Danielle Daigle (Dayton, ME) succeeded in breaking through Lasell's defensive line and tearing towards net for a shot. The attempt cracked off the near side post and bounced back into play for a second chance at goal, this time by Doe Leckie (Naples, ME) who drove a second shot into the same post. Doe picked up her own rebound and this time rattled the shot off the crossbar before Kim Jordan (Bangor, ME) came in and sunk the winning shot into the back of Lasell's goal.
The Lasers powered forward for 11 more shots before the final buzzer but were unable to produce allowing St. Joseph's to return home victorious.
The GNAC scuffle marked the final regular season home contest for the Lasers who will hit the road for the remaining three games before the conference tournament. Their next game is Wednesday, October 19th at 3:30 p.m. at Johnson & Wales University.
