Coast Guard Steals Win from Lasers in Season Opener

Newton, Mass. - The Lasell College women's soccer team opened up today on Taylor Field, playing the Cougars of the Coast Guard Academy.  The teams were about equal in opportunities to score throughout the game, with Lasell taking 12 shots and Coast Guard attempting 13, however it was the Cougars that were victorious, taking the win, 2-1.

The Cougars were the first to score in today's game, with Melissa Eding (Shamong, NJ) setting up Shannah Shelton (Upper Marlboro, MD) who completed the play in the first half at the 12:39 mark. The Lasers remained scoreless until after the halftime break, when Lasell's Meredith Hessler (Middletown, RI) tied the game with an unassisted goal at 48:47.  The Laser's lead was short-lived however, as the Coast Guard answered back with their final goal just seconds later.

Lasell had opportunities late in the game to score again, however, they couldn't connect with the net. The Cougars game winning goal was scored by Katie Kurek (Williamstown, NJ), assisted by Mary Morgan (Little Silver, NJ). 

Coast Guard's Trish Ohle (Franklin Lakes, NJ) and Mary Mills (Amhest, NH) shared time in goal today combining for 3 saves, while Jamie Remmers (West Islip, NY) collected 7 saves in net for the Lasers.

The Lasers are now 0-1-0 this season and will play next on Tuesday, September 9th, at 3:30 p.m. on Taylor Field.
