WLX: Lasell overpowers Dean for GNAC victory

FRANKLIN, Mass. – Graduate student Jordan McComb (Cumberland, R.I.) and junior Sydney Brady (Westfield, Mass.) scored five goals apiece Sunday afternoon as Lasell University defeated Dean College, 21-8, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's lacrosse game at Grant Field.

Lasell improves its record to 3-1 both overall and in the GNAC, while Dean, in its first season as a member of the GNAC, drops to 0-3 overall and in league play.

McComb added six assists, seven ground balls and eight draw controls to her total, while Brady collected two ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers. Sophomores Emily Chapdelaine (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Caroline O'Leary (Gloucester, Mass.) tallied three goals apiece for the winners, and senior Caitie Grady (Southbury, Conn.) led the defense with five caused turnovers. Chapdelaine and junior Courtney Sobolewski (Derry, N.H.) also grabbed five draw controls each as Lasell won 20 of the 30 draws.

Sophomore Maire Brown (Huntington, N.Y.) was the top player for Dean, scoring six of the team's eight goals. Sophomore Jasmine Sztyler-Magee (Burlington, Conn.) had a solid game with seven ground balls, three draw controls and three caused turnovers in addition to a goal and an assist.

McComb had three goals and an assist as Lasell jumped out to a 6-1 lead through the first 16 minutes. After Brown added her second goal for Dean, the Lasers tacked on four consecutive goals to extend their lead to 10-2. The Bulldogs came alive with three straight goals of their own, but a late goal by junior Sophie Fistori (Dartmouth, Mass.) pushed the Laser margin to 11-5 at the intermission.

Brown's third goal for Dean kept the Bulldogs to with 13-6 early in the second half, but Lasell answered with six unanswered goals, including three from Chapdelaine, to put the game out of reach.

Lasell will play another GNAC road game this Wednesday, April 14, at Anna Maria College at 6 p.m. Dean will be home again on the same day for a GNAC encounter against Johnson & Wales University at 4 p.m.
