NEWTON, Mass. – Three Lasell College student-athletes were honored Monday by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) for their performances in the Laser sports action last week.
Senior Ben Lane (Rutland, Vt./Rutland) was named GNAC Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Week, and freshmen Alex Beauchemin (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) and Erin Kriger (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) were selected GNAC Men's and Women's Lacrosse Rookies of the Week, respectively. Lane was recognized with a weekly honor for the second time this spring, while the other two are first-time honorees.
Additionally, Lasell has earned the GNAC Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week honor four straight weeks and five of the six weeks of the season, with four different Lasers earning the honor.
A senior sprinter, Lane took first place in two events last Saturday at the Regis College Spring Classic. He won the 100 and 200-meter dashes, and broke his own school record in the 100. Lane ran a time of 11.45 seconds in the preliminaries of the 100, and lowered it to 11.34 seconds in the finals, bettering his own school record of 11.39 seconds set last year. He also ran a 23 seconds flat to win the 200 meters. There were 22 sprinters in the 100 and 30 in the 200.
Lane is the defending GNAC champion in the 100 meters, capturing the event last spring at the inaugural conference championships. He also finished as GNAC runner-up in the 200 meters.
A freshman goalie, Beauchemin posted a 2-0 record with a 4.67 goals against average, a 61.1 save percentage and 11 saves in a 2-0 week for Lasell with a pair of GNAC wins. He made four saves on six shots in the first half of a 14-7 win Tuesday at Emmanuel College, and made seven saves on 12 shots Saturday in an 11-5 triumph over Norwich University, last year's GNAC regular season co-champion.
A starter in 10 of 11 games this season, Beauchemin leads the GNAC and ranks third nationally in Division III with a 6.11 goals against average. He also ranks second in the conference with nine victories and sixth with a .546 save percentage.
A freshman midfielder, Kriger recorded five points on four goals and one assist in a pair of GNAC victories for Lasell. She tallied three goals in a 23-11 conference win over Rivier University, and added a goal and an assist in a 15-6 conference victory over Norwich. She also collected three ground balls, two draw controls, and two caused turnovers in the two wins.
Kriger ranks sixth on the team and first among freshmen with 12 points on nine goals and three assists. She is also fifth on the team with 13 draw controls and ninth with 13 ground balls, both tops among rookies.
