WLX: Lasell downs Emerson for fourth straight victory

NEWTON, Mass. – Senior Vanessa Pino (Methuen, Mass.) and junior Jorgia Bergin (Sandwich, Mass.) scored three goals apiece Monday afternoon to lead the Lasell College women's lacrosse team to a 15-6 victory over Emerson College in a non-conference make-up game at Grellier Field.

Pino and Bergin led a balanced Laser offense, as five players scored at least two goals and senior Jordan McComb (Cumberland, R.I.) tallied a goal and three assists. Juniors Amanda DiLeonardo (West Haven, Conn.) and Chloe Shugrue (Worcester, Mass.) and sophomore Kellie Matthews (Walpole, Mass.) all tallied two goals to help the Lasers to their fourth straight victory, improving to 5-1 overall.

McComb also collected five draw controls and five ground balls and sophomore Caitie Grady (Southbury, Conn.) picked up five ground balls.

Junior Jenny Tomsky (Clinton, N.J.) led the visitors with two goals, and four other players scored one goal each. The Lions drop to 0-2 on the season.

Lasell scored the first five goals of the game from five different players in the opening 12 minutes. Sophomore Kelli Mark (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) broke through for Emerson midway through the half, but Lasell tossed in the next four goals over the next five minutes, including two from Pino, to open up a 9-1 lead. Tomsky scored her first goal for Emerson with nine minutes on the clock, but Lasell scored three more before the break and held a 12-2 margin at the intermission.

Emerson score the first two goals of the second half, but Lasell tallied the next three to push the lead to 15-4. Emerson rounded out the scoring with the final two goals.

Lasell goalies, junior Morgan Choquet (Woonsocket, R.I.) and freshman Devin Zambruno (Plymouth, Mass.), each played 30 minutes in goal and each made four saves. Freshman Elizabeth Fretz (Falls Church, Va.) made seven saves for Emerson.

Lasell is home again on Thursday, March 21, hosting Salem State University in a non-conference affair at 3:30 p.m. Emerson is idle until visiting Coast Guard on Saturday, March 30, at 1 p.m.
