WLX: Lasell drops road game at Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. – Junior Kyra Schwartzman scored a game-high five goals, while classmates Meg Sharick, Lilly Callahan, and Molly Covarrubias each finished with a hat-trick of their own Thursday afternoon as Wheaton College defeated Lasell College, 18-3, in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Nordin Field.

The Lyons pick up their first win of the season to improve to 1-2, while the Lasers drop to 1-1. Wheaton avenged a 15-13 loss to Lasell in last year's season opener.

Senior Jordan McComb (Cumberland, R.I.) led the Lasers with two goals and classmate Vanessa Pino (Methuen, Mass.) followed up with one goal. McComb also collected a team-high six ground balls and caused two turnovers.

Wheaton jumped on top early with a goal from Callahan at 28:41. Covarrubias would find the back of the net shortly after to put the Lyons up by two before Lasell's McComb was able to net her first goal of the game at 27:31. The Lyons continued to find their form after the initial goal, outscoring the Lasers with a 10-1 run to set the score at 12-2 as the two sides headed into intermission.

Wheaton pushed its lead to 13-2 in the first three minutes of the second period before Lasell was able to get back on the board at 20:25 with a free position shot. The Lyons found their rhythm soon after, going on to score five unanswered goals to pick up the victory.

Sophomore Kellie Matthews (Walpole, Mass.) contributed a team-high three draw controls for the Lasers. Junior Morgan Choquet (Woonsocket, R.I.) had a busy day in goal and finished with six saves.

Lasell returns home to host Washington & Jefferson College next Tuesday, March 12, at noon at Grellier Field.
