Lasell Women’s Lacrosse freshman named GNAC Rookie of the Week

NEWTON, Mass. – One of the top freshmen on the Lasell College women's lacrosse team was honored by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Monday for her performance in a Laser victory last week.

Freshman Kellie Matthews (Walpole, Mass./Falmouth H.S.) was named GNAC Women's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week after Lasell's 20-15 victory Tuesday over Gordon College. The game was Lasell's only contest of the week.

A 5-10 attacker, Matthews recorded three goals, one assist and five draw controls in the win over Gordon. She scored back-to-back goals early in the first half to help the Lasers to an early 5-1 lead, and later had an assist as Lasell went ahead 15-7 at halftime. Her last goal came with two minutes remaining in the game, breaking a streak of seven straight Gordon goals and holding off a comeback attempt by the Fighting Scots.

Matthews is tied for third on the team in scoring after two games with six goals and one assist, and ranks third with five draw controls and tied for second with four ground balls.

The Lasers, 2-0, are slated for two road games this week, weather and field conditions permitting – Thursday, March 15, at Roger Williams University (4:00 p.m.) and Saturday, March 17, at Emerson College (1:00 p.m.)
