Wildcats Avenge Women's Lacrosse 14-13

NEWTON, Mass. (4/8/17) -- The Lasell College women's lacrosse team scored seven first-half goals, but the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales University staged a late surge and were one goal better in a 14-13 decision on Saturday afternoon at Grellier Field.

The Lasers snap a three-game winning streak, moving to 6-4 on the season and 3-1 in GNAC play, while the Wildcats rise to 7-4 overall and remain unbeaten in the conference at 3-0.

Sophomore Vanessa Pino (Methuen, Mass.) scored six goals and added an assist to pace the Lasers' attack, which saw three players post multiple goals. Freshman Samantha Taylor (Hanover, Mass.) and junior Taylor Yandow (Moretown, Vt.) were the other two, each netting a pair. Senior Bridget Delaney (Weymouth, Mass.) made 12 saves in the defeat, her second-highest total of the season.

Four JWU players scored multiple goals, including Gabrielle Vasile (Milford, Mass.) and Alexandra Anton (Dix Hills, N.Y.) who posted three apiece. Anton also added two assists for a five-point game, matching freshman Maria Patane's (Greenwich, N.Y.) two goals and three assists.

Yandow answered the Wildcats' opening score with back-to-back goals of her own within a five-minute span to give the Lasers a 2-1 lead, including a game-tying, free position shot.

After Pino scored her first goal of the game in unassisted fashion, three different goal scorers lifted JWU to a one-goal lead with 17:14 left in the first half. Lasell stormed back with Pino scoring two of the next four goals as it finished the half on a 4-1 run, leading 7-5 at halftime.

Freshman Madeline Bishara (Saunderstown, R.I.) and Anton scored the first goals of the second half as JWU tied the game, before Pino and freshman Amanda Brock (North Haven, Conn.) gave Lasell its two-goal advantage back. Pino assisted on Brock's tally. Down by two with less than 23 minutes to play, the Wildcats staged a furious rally, scoring six straight goals and seven of the next eight to take a four-goal lead. That stretch included two of Vasile's three tallies.

Lasell scored the game's last three goals, two of which came from Pino. She made the score 14-13 with 2:28 left, but that was as close as the Lasers would come.

Both teams return to action on Wednesday, April 12 as Lasell hosts Norwich at 4:00 p.m. and JWU welcomes Simmons to Providence, R.I., at 7:00 p.m.
