Lasers Suffer 12-4 Setback at Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. (3/5/17) - Wheaton College used an eight-goal first half surge to defeat the Lasell women's lacrosse team, 12-4, in a non-conference affair Sunday afternoon at Nordin Field. Lasell shifts to 1-1 with the result, while Wheaton moves to 1-1 as well.

The Lasers were first on the board by a man-up goal from freshman Samantha Taylor (Hanover, Mass.), but the Lyons bounced back and scored the next eight of ten goals to secure an 8-3 lead into halftime. Wheaton yielded the visitors to just one goal in the final 30, tacking on four of their own.

Taylor Yandow (Moretown, Vt.) scored two goals in the effort, while Jordan McComb (Cumberland, R.I.) accounted for the offensive remainder. Yandow additionally grabbed a pair of draws, factoring into Lasell's six total, up against Wheaton's 12.

Molly Covarrubias scored five goals for the Lyons in their first victory of the new season, and added two assists. Giovanna Bishop was the only other Lyon to score more than a single marker, adding two of her own, while five other Wheaton players found the back of the net in the win.

The Wheaton defense kept the Lasers at bay all contest, as the hosts allowed just six shots from the opposition. Conversely, the Lyons had 23 total shots, as keepers Bridget Delaney (Weymouth, Mass.) and Brooke Bergeron (Lynn, Mass.) spit time in the cage with six combined saves. Delaney (1-1) suffered the loss as the Lasers' starting keeper, while Molly Witten earned the victory with a single save.

Lasell will host Curry College on Grellier Field for the first time this season on Thursday, March 9, at 3:30 p.m.
