Women's Lacrosse Takes 14-10 Win at University of St. Joseph's

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (4/7/14) – The Lasell College women's lacrosse team snapped a two-game losing skid with a 14-10 victory over the University of St. Joseph's on Monday evening. Lasell improved to 6-5 overall and 4-2 in the GNAC and St. Joseph slipped to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

Lasell College sophomore Bridget Doherty (Franklin, Mass.) scored a game-high four goals and added an assist. Ashley Gleason (Suffield, Conn.), Ashlee Pechulis (Westfield, Mass.) and Taylor Dooley (Barnstable, Mass.) all scored twice for Lasell. Alexa Katsigianis (Amherst, N.H.) made five saves in just under 40 minutes of action to earn the win in goal for the Lasers, giving way to Brooke Bergeron for the final 20 minutes and stopping a pair of shots.

Rachel Foster (Newington, Conn.), Erika Leitao (Southington, Conn.) and Dayna Gambino (Newington, Conn.) all had three goals apiece for USJ.

Toni Minelli (Newington, Conn.) scored for Lasell 42 seconds into the game to initiate a quick start and by the time Doherty scored her first goal nearly 10 minutes in, Lasell led 4-0. Francesca Mastria (Higganum, Conn.) broke the Lasell streak, but three more goals, the last by Doherty put the Lasers up, 7-1. Foster and Leitao closed the first-scoring to bring the Blue Jays within 7-3 at intermission.

Again Lasell started quickly with goals from Britney Wuorio (Bolton, Mass.) and Doherty in the first 70 seconds of the second half to extend its lead to 9-3. But USJ battled back with a four-goal run, the last two by Foster to get St. Joseph within 9-7 with 21 minutes still remaining. Lasell answered with a four-goal run of its own to make it 13-7 with 15 minutes left and essentially decide the contest. 

St. Joseph hosts Simmons in another GNAC game Tue. April 8 at 4 p.m. Lasell hosts Rivier, also at 4 p.m. in a conference game.
