Women’s Lacrosse Takes Home Three Conference Honors

Sophomore Ashley Slattery (Weymouth, MA) and freshman Britney Wuorio (Bolton, MA) received First Team All-Conference honors from the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) and senior Tina Canavan (Stonington, CT) made the ranks amongst the second team for the 2011 season. 

 

Slattery, who was award the GNAC Rookie of the Year honor in 2010  as well as a place on the second team all-conference, had another phenomenal year for the Lasers. The sophomore midfielder finished first on the team in total goals (53), ground balls (44), draw controls (94), and caused turnovers (12), and finished second on the team in total points (61) adding eight assists to her 53 goals.  She scored two or more points in all 17 contests this season, averaging 3.58 points per game, and finished the year with 12 games of three or more points.  She had a season high seven points against Nichols, scoring a pair of hat tricks in the game and adding an assist.

 

Slattery also set a new single game record for draw controls in a game at Curry College on March 10th when she collected 19 draws in the match as well as a new record for draw controls in a season with 94. Additionally, she holds the record for ground balls in a season (69) from her rookie campaign.

 

Slattery reached, and surpassed, the 100 career point marker this year when she scored three points against Emerson College on April 13th, and is just four goals away from the 100 career goal milestone.

 

Slattery received two nods this season from the GNAC as the Player of the Week, was a selection for the GNAC All-Tournament team, and is ranked at 2nd in the GNAC and 5th amongst all NCAA Division III women's lacrosse players in draw controls per game (5.53). She is also ranked 10th in the conference and 66th nationally in goals.

 

Wuorio's rookie year was nothing less than exceptional as she led the team in total points and assists for most of the season.  The first year attack finished the season with 64 points, netting 45 goals and adding a team-best 19 assists, while also contributing with 20 ground balls and eight caused turnovers. 

 

Wuorio started in all 17 contests this season, averaging 3.76 points per game, and was selected three times as the GNAC Rookie of the Week. She scored two or more points in all 17 contests and had nine season hat tricks. 

 

Wuorio is currently ranked in the GNAC at 5th in assists per game (1.12) and 10th in points per game (3.76). 


Canavan is a three-time all-conference honoree from the GNAC having received second team honors in 2008 and 2009.  This year, after an injury sidelined her for the first half of the season, Canavan came back to score 49 points in just 10 games, netting 31 goals and adding 18 assists.  She set a new single-game record for assists in a game at Framingham State, handing out five assists in the contest, and averaged 4.9 points per game, to lead the team. Tina was also named to the GNAC All-Tournament team this season after scoring seven points and grabbing 13 draw controls during the post-season playoffs.  She is ranked 1st in the GNAC in assists per game (1.80) and points per game (4.90).

 

Canavan is a four year starter for the women's lacrosse team who has played in 51 total contests, and started in 46 of those games. During that time she has become the Lasers all-time career leader in assists, completing her career with 57 helpers, adding 184 career goals, for 241 total career points.  She also holds the all-time record in three other career categories, including man-down goals with five, draw controls with 185, and ground balls with 154.

 

Over her four year career, Canavan scored points in all but one contest, which was her very first game as a freshman, and she finished her career scoring points in 50 consecutive contests played, has scored more three or more points in 43-of-51 total contests, and averaged 4.7 points per game throughout her tenure.

 

The 2011 women's lacrosse team finished up the season in 2nd place in the conference, making it all the way to the GNAC Championship for the first time in school history.  The Lasers current record is 11-6 as they await word on the ECAC Division III New England Tournament.
