Lasers Dominate Gators in First GNAC Contest

NEWTON, MA-- Lasell College defeated the Gators of Pine Manor College, 19-4, Tuesday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference women’s lacrosse action on Grellier Field.  The Lasers improve to 4-3 this season (1-0 GNAC) and the Gators remain winless at 0-4 (0-1 GNAC).

 

Lasell scored off the initial draw as Andrea Ward (Hingham, MA) secured control and Tina Canavan (Stonington, CT) put in the ensuing shot.  Amanda Martin (Lowell, MA) gave Lasell a 2-0 advantage within thirty seconds after the first goal.

 

Pine Manor was put on the board when Myrell Redmond (Baltimore, MD) broke down field and scored unassisted, with two minutes elapsed, but Lasell followed with a seven goal stretch over the following six minutes to go ahead, 8-2, by the ten minute mark.  

 

At the half, Lasell had produced a 10-3 advantage.  Freshman Neila Kudla (Groton, MA) scored three times in the half, while Ariel Walmark (West Hartford, CT) and Ward scored twice each.   Karynne Cabral (Brookfield, CT) also notched one goal for the Lasers. Senior attack Elaine Rodriguez (Bronx, NY) made two marks for the visitors in the first stanza.

 

Ward scored eleven seconds into the second half, after which point the Lasers went on an 8-0 run to pull away, 19-3, through the final seconds of the game.  Rodriguez notched the Gators final goal as time ticked off the clock in the last second.

 

Lasell’s starting goalkeeper Lindsay Cahoon (Falmouth, MA) made seven stops in her second season win, while Pine Manor’s net-minder Colleen Tencza (South Meriden, CT) produced 12 saves in the defeat.

 

Ward was the top scorer in the contest with five points, scoring four goals and adding one helper.   Ashley Slattery (Weymouth, MA) and Kudla finished with four points each, and Martin and Canavan contributed three points for Lasell.

 

Rodriguez finished with three points and three ground balls and Beth Deegan (Philadelphia, PA) distributed one assist and had a game-high four draw controls.

 

The Lasers return to GNAC action on Thursday, March 25th at 4:00 p.m. when they face off against Simmons on Grellier Field.
